  • Opinion: Family-friendly places are full of liberty lovers

The Eastern New Mexico News|Updated Oct 12, 2018

CLOVIS — We need more businesses in town. We need more jobs, with higher pay, and more reasons to spend our entertainment dollars at home instead of traveling to Lubbock or Amarillo. But a few folks don’t want just any new businesses — they only want family-friendly businesses. And, of course, they want to decide what family-friendly means for all of us. As best we can tell, they have decided family-friendly businesses sell guns, alcohol, cigarettes, and scratch-off lottery tickets. At least we have plenty of busin... Full story

  • Capital's punishment

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 8, 2018

PORTALES - Lightning struck in the third quarter of Friday's Capital-Portales football game. But, the Rams had actually been striking all night. Returning from their bye week with a crackle, the Rams barreled over Capital 47-0 at Greyhound Stadium, and with that victory, climbed back to .500 by improving to 3-3. Just about everything clicked for Portales. The offense proved nearly impossible for Capital to stop. Defensively, four interceptions and a fumble recovery thwarted an...

  • Clovis girls notch first district win

The Staff of the News|Updated Oct 8, 2018

HOBBS — The more than two hour journey to Hobbs past flatland and sagebrush was well worth making for the Clovis girls soccer team on Saturday, as it resulted in the Lady Wildcats' first district win of the season. Thanks to freshman striker Nevaeh Coronado's goal, the Lady 'Cats prevailed 1-0, improving to 1-0-1 in District 4-5A play. Clovis had opened its district slate on Tuesday, with a scoreless tie at Carlsbad. Saturday, Danielle Griego and Madison Lynch assisted on Coronado's goal. The Lady Wildcats (11-2-1 overall) w...

  • Wildcats take charge to open district

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 6, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — For the last three weeks, the Clovis Wildcat football team had to feel like they were running a race while wearing weighted vests. And then Friday, the vests came off and it was sprinting time. The Clovis Wildcats followed up a brutal 0-3 run through Lubbock teams with a dominating performance that showed why they scheduled Monterey, Coronado and Cooper in the first place — winning 39-0 over Sandia in their District 2/5-6A opener Friday at F.M. Wilson Stadium. The Wildcats (3-4, 1-0) go right back to Wilson on... Full story

  • Melrose tops Texico in titleist match

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 6, 2018

TEXICO — It’s not much of a head-scratcher figuring out what the ultimate goal of a defending state volleyball champion is. Win another state championship, of course. If you did scratch your head, you probably need to switch shampoos. Almost as obvious seems the answer to how best to prepare for another championship run — play other quality teams, other state champions if possible. So when Texico hosted Melrose Thursday night, the reigning Class A champion Lady Buffaloes and 2017 3A champion Lady Wolverines (now 2A) were...

  • ENMU drops pair

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 6, 2018

COMMERCE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico resumes its volleyball season at home with a Friday-Saturday back-to-back. It can’t come soon enough for the Greyhounds, following a pair of losses over the weekend on the road — 3-0 Friday at Texas Woman’s and 3-2 Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce. The losses were the third- and fourth-straight for Eastern New Mexico (7-12, 5-6). Friday (Texas Woman’s 25-15, 25-18, 25-18) — The Pioneers had a balanced effort on offense, with Maggie Pyles, Elizabeth Ugbaja and Courtney Noel each totaling...

  • Regional wrap-up: Trio get Friday wins

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 6, 2018

The area football season marched on this weekend, with every local team in action except idle Farwell. And as usual, the results were mixed: Tucumcari 39, Texico 22 TUCUMCARI — The Wolverines switched quarterbacks at halftime, but still weren’t able to rally against Tucumcari up at Rattler Field. Ben Loewen started for Texico in the first half and went 4-for-9 passing for 54 yards, including an interception late in the second quarter that led to a Tucumcari touchdown and a 19-0 Rattlers lead. Loewen was also sacked six tim...

  • Ram girls fall to Lovington

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 6, 2018

PORTALES - Lovington pitched a second-half shutout, and found more than enough offense in the second half Thursday for a 3-1 victory over Portales in the District 4-4A opener for both teams. Anaee Reyes scored the equalizer less than six minutes into the second half for Lovington (4-9, 1-0). Sofia Corral followed with the go-ahead tally in the 49th minute and America Hernandez added the insurance in the 63rd minute. Rebekah Christensen had the lone tally in the sixth minute...

  • ENMU snags 2-2 tie

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 6, 2018

CANYON, Texas — It probably felt like a victory Saturday, even if it did go as just one point in the Heartland Conference standings. Gabriel Peres and Gregory Franusic each scored in the final 30 minutes of regulation to eliminate a 2-0 deficit, and neither team could get the winner in overtime Saturday as Eastern New Mexico left West Texas A&M with a 2-2 tie. Coupled with Thursday’s 5-2 win over Texas-Permian Basin, the Greyhounds (5-5-2, 3-3-2) grabbed four points in the standings to move to 11 overall — besting the nine...

  • Cats go 0-1-1 on week

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 6, 2018

CLOVIS - Saturday, Clovis' boys soccer team did something it hadn't done all season. The Wildcats lost. Hobbs coming into Leon Williams Stadium presented the 'Cats with an opportunity to bag their first District 4-5A victory while beating a longtime rival. Neither happened, as Clovis fell 3-0 and dropped to 13-1-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the all-important district play. "It hurts," Clovis head coach Greg Trujillo said, "but you've got to give credit to the Hobbs team. They played...

  • Clovis boys dominate Hobbs meet

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 6, 2018

HOBBS - To say the Clovis High boys cross country team ran away with the Hobbs Invitational might be underselling it a little. Clovis was so good from top to bottom at Thursday's race that if its top two runners were disqualified, the Wildcats still would have beaten the host Eagles by nine points for first place at the seven-team meet. Hobbs claimed the individual winner with Patrick Colburn's 15:38, but the Wildcats took five of the next seven places to finish with 25 points in a dominant victory. The Eagles were second wit...

Mackenzie Broderick scored a goal and assisted on Scott’s second as the host Rambelles (6-4-1, 4-1) moved up three points to 12 in the conference standings past Texas Woman’s (8) and behind West Texas A&M (15). Scott opened matters with a 27th-minute goal, which was quickly followed by Broderick’s tally. Avery McNeme scored five minutes...

  • Moral roadblocks aren't necessary

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 6, 2018

Though many other memories from my adolescence have been buried in favor of annoying song lyrics and clips from sitcoms and Marvel movies, I’ll never really forget the time I took the long way to New Mexico. My parents were driving me down from Montana for my freshman year of college, and my dad put together a trip that allowed for a few fun stops on the way. One was Phoenix, where I went to the sports bar owned by former NBA star Dan Majerle (mar-lee) and got his autograph. He was the first NBA player I ever saw in p...
