  • Education column: Cafeteria staff deserves appreciation

What’s cookin’ at the Clovis Municipal Schools? Lots of breakfasts and lunches. Funny how school meals are one of those things we tend to take for granted. Around the time of World War I (1914-1917) school lunches began to be served to children in many of our larger cities as “nutrition scientists” started looking at the overall welfare of children in schools. The School Lunch Committee of the Home and School League in Philadelphia provided a weekly menu of lunches, such as “baked beans and roll for 5 cents; cocoa or milk f...

  • Corn rich in variety

It’s fair time — After showing your livestock it’s unusual food time — mostly fried, like Twinkies and funnel cakes. A newie lately is bacon dipped in chocolate. Still, the one food that most of us have at the fair (as well as at home) is — corn on the cob covered with melted butter and whatever else is available. As we enjoy our “roasting ears” as my Texas friends call them, we can enjoy the knowledge that corn originated in America, somewhere in the Andes. This gift to all mankind was called “maize....

  • All who serve our country deserve respect

Freedom New Mexico The military’s ban on gays ended Wednesday. It will remain legal for military personnel to secretly hate lesbians, gays, bisexuals or transgendered people. Any member of the military has a right to believe other members are sinners destined for hell. Thoughts, values, beliefs and sexual proclivities are private matters, belonging to individuals. That is precisely why we should not have policies that exclude individuals from service to government institutions because of their sexual orientation. It is not O...

  • Letter to the editor: Norwood was asset to county jail

Norwood was asset to county jail I was very surprised to hear that Keith Norwood resigned. I don’t know why he resigned, but I believe he is more of an asset than a liability because he has positively changed the appearance of the Curry County jail, the morale of the staff, and the quality of care for residents as well as gained the support of volunteers. I have been here seven years and have worked (as a volunteer) alongside of three wardens who brought a wealth of experience to the jail. And I have seen three wardens, a...
