  • Cats beat Hobbs to open season

    Peter Stein|Updated Aug 25, 2018

HOBBS — Call them Hobbs, Hawbs, the Eagles, or maybe just those guys on the other side of the field. Whatever you call the Hobbs football team, it’s a program Clovis High loves to beat — any time, but especially Week 1. It was far from perfect Friday night at Hobbs High School — with penalties galore, and some missed offensive opportunities — but the Wildcats did what they came to do, they beat Hobbs, 32-21. Another notch for Clovis in the rivalry, and more important...

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 25, 2018

PORTALES — The Rams dropped their first football season-opener in four years on Friday night, as a Hope Christian stop in overtime preserved a 10-3 victory. Portales quarterback Julian Urioste tried to take off for the end zone on fourth and goal from the 10-yard line, but came up a couple of yards short. “We didn’t execute on offense,” Rams coach Jaime Ramirez said. “We gave up some big plays we shouldn’t have on defense, a couple of times. I thought our defense played good...

CANYON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico volleyball team opened its season by proving it would not go down without a fight. However, they couldn’t quite finish off the fight in compiling an 0-2 start. The Greyhounds fell behind 2-0 in both of their neutral-site matches at the Lady Buff Classic, and fought for a fifth set each time before falling 15-11 in both of their fifth sets to Emporia State and Adams State. The Greyhounds will continue today at the Classic against Lubbock C...

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 24, 2018

ROSWELL — Although Ruben Tellez’ Portales girls soccer team didn’t get a win in its season-opener, he nonetheless was pleased with what he saw. The Rams fell on Friday afternoon to Valencia, 3-0, in the Roswell Tournament in the season debut for both teams. Portales is trying to replace 12 seniors, and have just two seniors on this year’s team. “The girls played hard today, but had a lot of nerves,” Tellez explained. “But, they played well, so I can’t complain.” Vale...

  • Clovis soccer teams post goose eggs

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 24, 2018

By the staff of the news ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis offense needed just 10 minutes to make its presence known Friday against Sandia Prep, and the defense made its statement the rest of the day. Clovis held the Sundevils without a shot on goal, and the Wildcats notched a pair of goals in each half for a 2-0 victory to open an Albuquerque back-to-back. The Wildcats have to recover quickly, with a 9 a.m. match against Hope Christian. But if Clovis (2-0) can play with the same i...
