  • Floyd's Chenault recognized

Freedom New Mexico Chet Chenault of Floyd, a member of the University of the Southwest baseball team, was one of 73 USW athletes recognized for helping the Hobbs-based school win its second consecutive Red River Athletic Conference GPA award for the 2010-11 school year. USW’s 160 student-athletes compiled a combined GPA of 3.02 in 2010-11, said dean of athletics Mike Galvan. “This is rewarding for all of those directly involved with the student-athletes, from the faculty to the coaches and all those associated with aca...

  • Letters to the editor: Real problems lie with Congress

Real problems lie with Congress I write in support of George Speck from last week’s letters to the editor. Regarding the greed of the very rich: Somehow the dominant media “frame” continues the absurd idea that defending the people who suck up societal resources means protecting the “job creators.” This is exactly the reverse of what is actually happening. Despite the fact that many people are starting to realize this, those who hold the strings on the lawmakers continue to make them vote the wrong way repeatedly. This is a... Full story

  • Social Security delays only scare tactic

Freedom New Mexico Anxious senior-citizen readers may be worrying that their Social Security checks might be held up by the wrangling over raising the federal debt ceiling. It’s worth clearing up that misconception and some others. Republican leaders in the House of Representatives are trying to line up enough GOP votes to pass a budget bill to cut deficits by $7 trillion over a decade without increasing taxes. It clashes with a plan in the Democratic-controlled Senate, backed by President Barack Obama, to cut the deficit b...

  • N.M. still capitalizing on the Kid

Oh, Susana, I think you are onto a hot one. This “Catch the Kid” business, the contest to track down Billy the Kid and win 10,000 bucks? Good move, Gov. Martinez. Last Sunday I saw the full page ad featuring the contest poster: WANTED, BILLY THE KID. $10,000 REWARD. Here’s why that is a timely idea. New Mexico needs to start having fun again. Remember the good old days of New Mexico? Just speaking the name evoked thoughts of Albuquerque crowds cheering multi-colored, gently floating balloons, trips to the magnificent Carlsbad...

  • Affordable housing plan goes to vote Tuesday

    Sharna Johnson

When Clovis voters head to the polls Tuesday, they will decide whether to • give the city authority to reduce private developers’ permitting fees; • donate city-owned property to private developers; • give grants and loans to develop city-owned property in the downtown area; • give grants for weatherization and rehabilitation of privately owned homes; • and create a housing planning organization. Both sides of the contentious issue agree those five p...

  • Realtors: Housing demand strong

    Argen Duncan

The local housing market is slower than in the past but doing better than most of the nation, people involved in that market have said. “Compared to the rest of the country, we’ve really been blessed in Curry and Roosevelt counties,” said Wanda Graham of Kiva Realty in Portales. The area has seen foreclosures, but not as many as in other parts of the country, she said. People continue to buy and sell homes, although less than in the past. According to information from Graham, Portales real estate agents sold 52 homes this...

  • July 31 — Police blotter

Samplings of recent calls to Portales law enforcement, according to police records: Tuesday • An officer responded to a report of a domestic disturbance about 1:40 p.m. in the 800 block of North Avenue I. A 29-year-old woman said she and her boyfriend had argued, and he recorded her with a small video camera. • My turn: No sense, just real-life experience

One of my columns generated an e-mail from a gentleman who said that I didn’t have a lick of common sense. Apparently, I set him off by not toeing religious, political or fishing lines — or perhaps my tongue-in-cheek lines didn’t hook him. The blue-collar worker clearly wanted to wring my stereotyped collar. He probably didn’t know that I grew up the youngest of six kids on a small east Texas farm. For 25 years, my dad drove 80 miles round-trip to a steel mill. To earn college money, I also worked there during summe... Full story

Lendra Hailey said her great niece watched Sasha belt toward her owner Robert Bruhn in the second heat and yelled out “She’s going to win!” Isabella was right. After two years of racing in the competition, which is only for purebred Dachshunds, Sasha took first place during the event Saturd...

  • Miracle products lure wife

I’m convinced my wife would be an easy mark for a snake oil salesman. She’s pretty sure miracle products are hitting the store shelves regularly while I’m of the mindset that if what I’ve got is working, I don’t want something new until I actually see someone I know with the new thing. My wife will quickly seek out and buy any miracle cream she sees in a magazine just because it said it would lift out wrinkles or stop split-ends. I laugh at her every time she brings home wrinkle cream and I don’t think she likes it much when...

  • Our people: Portales music teacher Eunice Schumpert wanted to be an opera singer as a child

Eunice Schumpert of Portales doesn’t remember a time in her life when she wasn’t singing and playing the piano. She is on the cusp of her 90th birthday and continues to be active as a piano and voice teacher. Schumpert began teaching as early as her senior year of high school. She began her own studio in 1945. “I want to teach my students to love the divine art of music. I want them to strive for perfection and expression in interpretation,” she said. During World War II, she directed an all girls choir and has been playing... Full story
