    Eric Murray|Updated Jul 25, 2018

SAN ANTONIO — On Tuesday, the Lone Star Conference held its annual LSC Football Preseason Media Day at San Antonio's Marriott Riverwalk Hotel. The event, which features a lunch and interviews with players and coaches from all nine schools, is highlighted by the league's annual preseason poll and player of the year picks. One thing that Greyhounds coach Kelley Lee took out of Tuesday's event is that his team has gained quite a bit of respect from around the league. The Hounds w...

  • Roosevelt approves right-to-work ordinance

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Jul 25, 2018

PORTALES — By a 4-1 margin on Tuesday the Roosevelt County Commission voted to approve a right-to-work ordinance. The decision came following a public hearing on the ordinance that featured several speakers on both sides of the argument. Commissioner Dennis Lopez cast the lone vote against the ordinance. “I think that with no written agreement that would offset legal costs, with not showing me how it’s going to benefit our county and the private sector, on behalf of my constituents in District 1 I pretty much know how I’m g...

  • Courthouse contenders talk 'circulation'

    David Grieder|Updated Jul 25, 2018

CLOVIS — How to best address "circulation" at the Curry County Courthouse — that is, the flow of detainees around court staff and public in the building — came up in each of three presentations Tuesday afternoon from contenders for the architectural services contract. Curry County commissioners spent more than an hour listening to three finalists, selected from four groups to respond to the county's Request For Proposals on the renovation project, in a special meeting Tuesd...

  • Abusive airport screeners not above the law

    Los Angeles Times|Updated Jul 25, 2018

Most Americans are far likelier to be searched by an agent of the Transportation Security Administration than by an FBI agent. But according to a federal appeals court, if an FBI agent violates your rights you can file a lawsuit. If you’re manhandled by a TSA employee you’re out of luck. By a 2-1 vote, the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia has ruled against Nadine Pellegrino, a business consultant from Boca Raton, Florida, who claimed that a search of her belongings at Philadelphia International Airport in...

  • Good to treat enemies as humans

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jul 25, 2018

The political left, and much of the political right, keeps putting me in an uncomfortable position where I almost feel the need to defend President Trump. Almost. It’s not a position I enjoy. I see no legitimacy in the office of president, nor in any other political office for that matter. I don’t care about Donald Trump one way or the other; he’s irrelevant to my day-to-day life. But the way the political left overreacts to everything he does goes beyond criticism into delus... Full story

  • Hounds third in LSC poll

The Staff of the News|Updated Jul 24, 2018

SAN ANTONIO — Tuesday’s release of the Lone Star Conference Preseason Football Poll at the LSC’s annual Preseason Media Day didn’t reveal too many surprises, according to members of the Eastern New Mexico football team on hand. The Greyhounds were ranked third in the poll, trailing only Texas A&M-Commerce and Midwestern State. Commerce is the defending Division II national champs, while Midwestern won the league last season with an 8-0 mark. Both teams are responsible for Eastern’s (8-2, 6-2) only losses in 2017. “No (I wa...

  • Clovis American's run ends

The Staff of the News|Updated Jul 24, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — It was a magical run for Clovis American’s 13-14 Junior League softball team. Tuesday, though, it came to an end after the purple and white lost their second game of the day, falling to Texas West 6-0 at the Isleta Reservation in the regional tournament semifinals. Clovis American, sent to the loser’s bracket by Sunday’s 11-0 loss to Texas East, couldn’t afford another defeat in the regionals. The team did collect two victories since that loss, routing tournament host New Mexico Westgate 20-1 on Monday, t...
