  • Our People - College town guy

    Jillian Holbert

Why did you decide to start your practice in Portales? I was attracted to Portales because it was a college town and I've been in college towns for a while. I liked the thought of living in a college town, and I met my wife here, and we raised a couple of kids. What is it like being your own boss? Growing up, I always thought that being your own boss was a good thing. Now that I am, I'm the last one to get paid every month. What do you like to do outside of work? My wife and I at one time were board sailors, wind surfers....

  • Top-seeded Rams roll

    Eric Norwood CMI correspondent

Even a flooded field couldn't slow down the top-seeded Portales softball team. In a game relocated to Clovis, the Lady Rams blanked Soccoro 15-0 in a run-rule shortened game Friday in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament. CMI correspondent: Joshua Lucero Portales Ram centerfielder Kacie Terry snags a fly ball for an out in the top of the fourth inning of the Rams' Friday afternoon game against the Socorro Lady Warriors at the Lady Wildcat Softball Field in Clovis.... Full story

  • Hollis' distance double effort comes up short

    Isaac Avilucea CMI correspondent

ALBUQUERQUE — The strategy for Texico's Colton Hollis in the Class 2A boys 3,200 meters could be classified as a simpleton's game plan. "I just wanted to come out and run as hard as I could for as long as I could," he said, minutes after the lung-sapping race. Unfortunately for Hollis, the No. 1 seed who led for half the race, he couldn't outlast Mora's Alonzo Chavez. CMI correspondent: Junfu Hahn Fort Sumner's Michael Giannini makes his last discus throw Friday morning in t...

  • Lady Buffs lead after first day

    Isaac Avilucea CMI correspondent

ALBUQUERQUE — Caley Barnard's foot was mummified in athletic tape, yet the Melrose sophomore still managed to put the nail in everyone's sarcophagus at Friday's Class 1A girls state track and field championships at the University of New Mexico's track facility. A hobbled Barnard was still leaps and bounds better than the rest of her competitors in pole vault competition, and she added third-places finishes in high jump and triple jump. CMI correspondent: Junfu Hahn Floyd's T... Full story

  • Portales girls second at district, boys third

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

As a Portales High freshman in 2009, Sutton injured her back playing volleyball, something she said had been coming on for a while. "Doing sports all my life, it probably just finally gave out," she said, noting she had been playing in some pain. Sutton had to have surgery for two protruding discs, and she wasn't released for sports again until January of this year. • Clovis dominates at district track meet

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

Clovis High sophomore Kane Bender needed a new pole after breaking his during pole vault practice earlier this week. Suffice it to say, the new one — actually an old one found by CHS assistant coach Casey Pack — worked wonders. Bender soared 1 1/2 feet above his previous best, going 12 feet, 6 inches to edge teammate Hector Flores on fewer misses for the win in Friday's District 4-5A track meet at Leon Williams Stadium. He also qualified for state competition next week at Alb...

  • Scaring Mom has potential to backfire

    Grant McGee Local columnist

Mother's Day is tomorrow. I'll catch up with mom and see how she's doing. I'll tell her she's "The Greatest Mom Ever" and how much I love her. I wish I knew more about my mom. What I mean is I know a lot about my mother, but the time before her high school years is a mystery to me. I do know my mom could roller-skate and this is how I found out. Once upon a time, long ago and far away, I was running around the house and getting into mischief. I was about 8 years old and didn't have to go to school, so it was probably a Saturd...

  • In search of ponies: Celebrate your pet this week, or month

    Sharna Johnson Local columnist

Did you know it's national pet week (or month depending on the source)? They made sure I did, which I suppose is a good thing since it's not something I would normally even be aware of. The "they" I am referring to are the web crawling, public relations spammers that get a hold of an email address and send press release after press release. They desperately want their messages communicated to "the readers" and find incredibly clever ways to try and persuade their way into print — including riding on the coat tails of h... Full story

Marquis was taken into custody after the jury's verdict and faces sentencing by 9th Judicial District Chief Judge Teddy Hartley at a date not yet determined. Chandler said Marquis was found guilty of all 12 felony counts of... Full story

  • Fire tower one of state's many hidden gems

    Clyde Davis

It looks like a lighthouse, this forest service fire tower hidden in plain sight on Monjeau Peak, just outside of Ruidoso. That is, of course, a contextual association, feasible only for one like myself, who grew up closer to lighthouses than to Rocky Mountain forest fire watchtowers. It's an amazing place, an amazing project, and a monument to the power of any program, in this case the Civilian Conservation Corps, which reinforces people's motivation and energy by putting those who are temporarily unemployed to work on...

  • Claytons role models to all of us

    Karl Terry

I went to the funeral of my high school principal last week. Emmitt Clayton showed his male students it was OK to be gentle and kind and he demonstrated to female students that even handsome guys could and should act as a gentleman around them. I admit I saw the role model Mr. Clayton presented to us every day but I didn't much appreciate it at the time. Gentleness didn't seem like a great path to manhood. I always saw our high school administration as a bit like a police...
