  • Judge rejects racino lawsuit dismissal, at least for now

    David Grieder|Updated Apr 4, 2019

ALBUQUERQUE — Citing objections from other applicants, a judge on Thursday declined to rule on a motion to dismiss the lawsuit that last year halted the racino award selection process, according to state officials. The New Mexico Racing Commission, previously poised to announce in December which of five applicants would receive the state’s sixth and final racing license, delayed that decision following a petition for injunctive relief filed Nov. 28 in the 2nd Judicial District. That suit, filed by Hidalgo Downs, LLC and other...

  • Racino lawsuit dismissed; implications unclear

    Updated Apr 3, 2019

BY THE STAFF OF THE NEWS ALBUQUERQUE - Attorneys agreed this week to dismiss a lawsuit filed last year that halted the selection process of a final racino license from the New Mexico Racing Commission. According to a "stipulated motion to dismiss" filed Wednesday in the 2nd Judicial court, plaintiff and defense attorneys agreed to dismiss the pending suit on the grounds that "the parties have reached a mutually acceptable resolution to all of the claims presented in this case." That filing did not specify what the terms were...

  • Prince Street Overpass open to traffic

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 3, 2019

The Prince Street Overpass is again open to motorists. Manon Arnett of the New Mexico Department of Transportation confirmed the re-opening of the bridge at about 2:30 p.m., following a $2.5 million repair that began in August. Work on the 30-year-old overpass included replacement of the concrete approach slabs, sidewalk repair, a raised median, a metal pedestrian railing, wall barriers, repaired concrete, replaced abutments, a chain link fence, new lighting, an application... Full story

  • Trying to embrace memories as a gift

    Patti Dobson|Updated Apr 2, 2019

Sometimes, we get weary. We all have those people that we can turn to (or run to depending on the situation) when the day-to-day grind overwhelms us. But, what do we do when one of those voices is silenced? For me, The Dad was just such a person. While the grief of his passing is always under the surface, of late it has made its presence known with a vengeance. And carrying the weight of that is exhausting. The simplest of things can put us right back to the moment of our...

  • Two betrayers wept two very different tears

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Apr 2, 2019

Here’s a riddle for you. It’s one that intrigues and gives me pause about this same time every year. Two men, two mouths, both tongues betray, almost but not quite on the same day. One fails and weeps, shinnies up and up and falls putrescently; one fails and weeps, bows down and down and rises taller, finally, than before his perfidy. Love’s victory! Who are they? I’m neither a poet nor the son of a poet, and not much riddle-writer at all. But onward I hint. Two men. Two wor...

  • Paramedic preserving ceremonies of remembrance

    Betty Williamson|Updated Apr 2, 2019

No one says farewell to one of their own more beautifully than the community of first responders - the firefighters, police officers, and paramedics who see front-line action on a daily basis. Now, thanks to a Clovis paramedic with a high-flying drone and a flair for film-making, those poignant services are being preserved in touching videos that capture those impressive ceremonies. If you have access to the internet, you may have seen recent video tributes from the funeral...
