  • Going green

With rising energy costs, Americans are taking a harder look lately at alternative energy and ways to save on their energy bill. Agriculture producers are included in that mix. Agriculture experts say that not only are producers looking for ways to save on costs, they’re also on the lookout for niche markets involved with providing environmentally and economically sound solutions. With that in mind, the organizers of the 16th annual New Mexico Ag Expo on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds in Portales ar...

  • Always a competitor

David Lansford is stepping down as Clovis’ mayor after 12 years. We’ve been asking family and friends to share stories about him. Here’s what his brother Mark had to say: “My earliest memories of David are that he has always been a fierce competitor. It did not matter what the situation was, he wanted to win or achieve the highest result. While doing so, he maintained an attitude of fair play and an adherence to the rules. “David was a gifted athlete, which presented some interesting problems for the rest of us. For examp...

  • Independence with peace needed for Kosovo

Freedom New Mexico The controversy over the province of Kosovo formally declaring independence from Serbia on Sunday may not turn out to be as explosive as some observers think. But the move is an example of how decisions taken during emotional periods can have consequences years down the road that are not necessarily beneficial for the original decision maker, in this case, the United States. Kosovo’s independence has its roots in the 1991 breakup of what used to be Yugoslavia into what are now the separate countries of S...

  • Pledge writers deserve show of hands

It takes strong bricks to build strong buildings. It takes strong women to build a strong community. That’s what I heard Tuesday at a reception honoring the women of the Ellen W. Jones Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. If that’s true, and I believe it is, it’s no wonder Portales has survived and remained strong and true to its own. The women honored Jane Mauk Hilliard, Margaret Smith and Jan Ross-Compton as great examples of the strong women it took to build this community. The reception and honors were...

  • Smithsonian exhibit opens at ENMU

Chocolate grenades and aprons from various decades dating back to the 1940s were just a few of the things visitors experienced at the opening ceremonies of “Key Ingredients, America By Food,” Saturday. The traveling Smithsonian Institute exhibit, currently calling Eastern New Mexico University’s Golden Library home, celebrates food and how it has shaped American culture. It also deals with how the food we eat and the way it is prepared and processed has changed over the years. The exhibit and the events surrounding it are c...

  • Ag Expo set to draw crowds, honor friend

Chester Harth dedicated himself to agriculture and the New Mexico Ag Expo, say his friends. For that reason, this year’s event is dedicated to his memory. The Expo begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds with a brief dedication ceremony. Harth died last year after chairing the Ag Expo for the second time. Organizers say he was involved with the 16-year-old event all but two years and actively worked to make it a success. His passion was organizing the antique tractor demonstrations and parade each y...

  • Clovis girl looks for bee repeat

    CNJ Staff

Beagles may be more popular after the Westminster Dog Show last week, but “schnauzer” was the buzzword during Saturday’s Curry County Spelling Bee. Christina Benitscheck will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee in Canyon, Texas, after correctly spelling the German dog breed in the final round of the competition. Christina competed against eight other spellers in the senior division of the Curry County Spelling Bee at the Clovis Community College Town Hall auditorium. The senior division includes students from sixth throu...

De Baca County News photo: Scot Stinnett Derrill Mitchell has parts ready for a new windmill to be erected near Las Vegas, N.M. The project was delayed by 12 inches of snow in the area. FORT SUMNER — It’s hard to imagine the American frontier without a windmill poking out of the horizon, its silver vanes slicing the crosswinds. Though electricity-generating giants have sometimes sprouted in their place, the traditional windmills that once pumped groundwater for thirsty livestock have largely become decorative fixtures. • Patience with health care difficult

Our son Matteo, whom we adopted from Ethiopia about a year and a half ago, has had numerous health problems since arriving in the United States. Matteo had been abandoned by the side of a road, so the orphanage he came from didn't have any background information, which can be common with international adoptions, and some of the blood tests he underwent while in Ethiopia turned out to be either false, inaccurate or simply from another child. The lack of information combined with incorrect assumptions about these tests has...

  • Hounds sweep Saturday twin bill

    Dave Wagner

Awaiting his start in the second game of Eastern New Mexico’s Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader with Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday at Greyhound Field, junior right-hander Ismael Solis wondered if maybe the Greyhounds were saving any runs for him. As it turned out, he didn’t have to worry. ENMU followed up a 23-13 rout of the Savage Storm with a 12-6 victory behind Solis’ complete-game performance in the seven-inning nightcap. The opener, scheduled for nine innings, was called in the bottom of the seventh by a...
