  • Cold, cold cows

    PNT Staff

Come rain or shine, snow or ice, livestock producers must battle the elements on a daily basis to ensure their livestock is cared for and their livelihood is not damaged or lost. Snow and ice storms that have recently hit the area, with temperatures dropping down into the single digits, are a small indication of what producers must face. “It’s been a terrible year,” said Jim Idsinga, a Roosevelt County dairy farmer. “We’re taking some pretty hard hits.” Wet weather conditions have contributed to pens turning into mud pits, w...

    Dave Wagner

ENMU senior guard Stephen Wilson has found his shooting stroke lately, averaging more than 22 points in the Greyhounds’ last three games. (CNJ staff photo: Andy Delisle) It’s taken a while, but Eastern New Mexico University men’s coach Shawn Scanlan said he’s finally starting to see the Stephen Wilson he thought he recruited two years ago. After averaging less than eight points a game through last season and the first 12 games of the 2006-07 campaign, the 6-foot-2 senior guard from Heflin, Ala., has delivered three consecutiv...

(CNJ staff photo: Andy DeLisle) It's not set up in a traditional bracket format, with winners advancing to play each other, but the Milk Madness Classic will have a championship game of sorts today anyway. Clovis was scheduled to play Roswell High on Saturday night at any rate, which is just as well because both squads won t...

  • Elida girls hold off Floyd

    Freedom Newspapers

FLOYD — Floyd girls basketball coach Cody May said his Lady Broncos just dug themselves too deep a hole to crawl out of Friday night against Elida, and not even a late rally could save them. But they sure tried. The Floyd girls outscored Elida 24-12 in the fourth period, spurred by junior Ronnie Mendoza’s team-best nine points, and freshman Alexis Benoit’s seven points. The Lady Broncos’ late charge was too little, too late, as Elida remains undefeated in District 3-1A with a 46-39 win. The Lady Tigers (16-2, 2-0 distric...

  • 87-year-old building on Prince has unique history

    Don McAlavy

After World War I, the Clovis Baptists launched a drive to build a hospital for Clovis. The drive to finance it started in 1919, and by Oct. 7, 1920, the Baptist Hospital at 515 North Prince St. was built. It was the only hospital in eastern New Mexico at that time. The 23-bed hospital cost $35,000 to build, with the sponsor being First Baptist Church at Grand Avenue and Gidding Street. With First Baptist in debt, the New Mexico Baptists took over the hospital on Oct. 31, 1924. For 19 years the hospital carried on, even...

  • Mothers can still be daddy's girls

I never thought of myself as daddy’s girl. My dad, who is a tour manager in Rome, recently went back to Italy after spending several weeks with me during my husband’s deployment. My hubby left a few days after my fourth C-section, and my parents were concerned about my situation with five children, newborn to age 6, so my dad was sent on “Operation Rescue Anita,” ORA. At any given time, the ability to spend many weeks with my father would have been unique, especially because I live so far from family. But being alone,...

  • Children’s logic often produces smiles

    Bob Huber

Whenever I write about the wonder of school children and their test papers, I get enough fodder for another column from teachers who save them. Some, of course, are a little too shady to appear in a family newspaper, and so I sell them on the black market. Here are the latest witty comments gleaned from science tests. Sit back, put your feet up, and enjoy the half-vast intelligence of these children. Keep in mind, they will be running the world 30 years from now. • Question: Name the four seasons. Answer: Salt, pepper, mustar...

  • Unique gifts require imagination

When it comes to gift giving, I’ve long been in favor of the unique, the unusual, the unexpected. The recent Christmas season gave me a chance to gift the entire family with something, I believe, caught everyone by pleasant surprise. I’d purchased a November issue of Santa Fean magazine, with the goal of finding convenient locations for cross-country skiing. While checking out the recently opened Valles Caldera preserve, I discovered they also offer something which would fulfill that unique, experiential gift category. Mor... Full story
