  • A driving force

link Bobby Dudley, a Clovis Area Transit System driver for eight years, checks the transmission fluid on a CATS vehicle Thursday as part of a pre-trip inspection. [email protected] Macrina Christian works nearly five miles from her home, and without a vehicle, she relies on the people she says are like her “best friends” at Clovis Area Transit System to give her a lift. “I do a lot of walking, so it’s nice to ride,” said Christian, who even gave snacks and treats to CATS em...

  • Rams lose again at St. Mike's Shootout

CMI staff SANTA FE — It was the same story in Santa Fe for the Portales Rams, as poor shooting was the culprit in another rought night. Friday night, it was Wingate that jumped out to a big lead, and never let Portales get back into things in a 54-45 victory at the St. Michael’s Shootout. Kennel Jones scored 13 points to lead three in double figures for Wingate (8-6), which posted a 16-4 advantage after the first quarter, and never led by less than three the rest of the night. “We just didn’t shoot well again,” Portales... Full story

  • Clovis girls move to 15-0 with rout of Valley

CMI staff ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis High’s girls executed the first half of their Albuquerque weekend well enough. Clovis coach Jeff Reed, though, expects a tougher test tonight when the Class 5A top-ranked Lady Wildcats venture into La Cueva’s bailiwick. Junior guard Danni Williams scored a career-best 34 points on Friday night and the Lady Cats improved to 15-0 with an 86-51 rout of Valley. Clovis was on a pace to push the 100-point mark, but much of the second half was played with a running clock. Reed said his team struggled a...

  • Caution: Laughter May Cause a Rise in Blood Pressure

    Curtis Shelburne

One of my favorite Christmas gifts this year is, no kidding, a doormat, one with a label proclaiming, “This perfectly fine if not certainly adequate DOORMAT is Made in the USA.” This fine doormat was bundled with some other gifts, one of which was a prodigious chunk of fine blue cheese. A love of blue cheese is certainly an acquired taste, one that I certainly acquired years ago. I love the stuff. The fact that good blue cheese smells, some say, like dirty socks, which are...

  • Cold-shooting Rams fall to Silver in round-robin

CMI staff SANTA FE — Thursday was just one of those nights where the ball wouldn’t go in the basket for the Portales Rams. Mainly in the third quarter. Tied at halftime, the Rams managed only two points in the third stanza and dropped a 49-39 decision to Silver in the St. Michael’s Shootout four-team round-robin. The Rams (8-6) return to action with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff today against Wingate, a team they beat early in the season at Greyhound Arena, but a squad which battled the host Horsemen to the wire before falling 51-49...

  • Lady Rams win at Roswell High, improve to 14-1

CMI staff ROSWELL — The Portales Lady Rams, who moved into the No. 1 spot in the Maxpreps.com Class 3A rankings this week, were businesslike in dispatching Roswell High on Thursday night. Now the Lady Rams will gear up for an even bigger challenge when they visit Class 5A No. 1 Clovis on Tuesday. Sophomore Kambrey Blakey scored 21 points and PHS led start to finish in posting a 53-37 win over the Lady Coyotes and improving to 14-1 for the season. As is often the case, Blakey was the Lady Rams’ leading scorer — in fact, she w...
