  • Public entitled to reasonable public meeting notice

Public officials say they encourage public involvement in matters relating to the public's business. Well, here's a chance for them to stand behind their words and prove they aren't just empty platitudes. They should push the New Mexico Legislature to enact a bill that triples the amount of public notice required before they convene their meetings. The bipartisan bill was pre-filed by state Rep. Jim Smith, R-Sandia Park, and state Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto, D-Albuquerque. It would require 72 hours notice prior to the start of a m...

  • Roswell High dominates Lady Rams in second half

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Clay Stout doesn't want to hear about how young his Portales Lady Rams squad is this season. With four freshmen and three sophomores on a 10-player roster — and junior guard Francis Armijo not available due to illness — PHS battled Roswell High through an up-and-down first half, scoring 10 of the last 13 points for a 13-12 lead at the break. But it was all Lady Coyotes after that. Roswell High scored on the first possession of the second half to take the lead for good, outscored Portales 17-4 in the third quarter and cru... Full story

  • Legislative Briefs - Jan. 18

    - Days remaining in session: 57 - Marriage equality: New Mexico voters would decide whether same-sex couples could get married in the state if the Legislature approves a proposed constitutional amendment sponsored by state Rep. Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe. "It's time to recognize all the families in New Mexico who are headed by same-sex couples," Egolf said Thursday. The proposal probably won't have an easy time in the Legislature. Lawmakers in recent years haven't even been able to pass legislation calling for state-recognized d...

  • Schools report little impact from flu

    Steve Hansen CMI staff writer

While the nation and the state worry through an unusually severe outbreak of influenza, schools in Curry and Roosevelt counties seem to be carrying on with no more absences than usual. Only two districts, Dora and Elida, reported greater illness rates than usual, but officials in neither district were able to say whether the flu was the cause. Jim Daugherty, superintendent of the Elida District, said there had been a number of "stomach flu" cases, not the sinus and respiratory symptoms of the strain of flu that is currently... Full story

  • Our real treasures are stored in heaven

    Joan Clayton

Life is full of wonderful treasures. God blesses in so many ways but lets be reminded that these are temporary blessings to be enjoyed during our earthly travels. Our real treasures are stored in heaven. Things can be enjoyable and we are grateful for them, but they really belong to God. We do not own anything when we are born into this life or when we leave it. We can own a wealth of precious memories if we have striven to walk in obedience to biblical principles. We can find ourselves by losing ourselves in loving and...

  • My Turn - Card games pass the time

    Alisa Boswell

So you all know I'm a Marvel junkie and I've mentioned one of my favorite games is Uno, so what is possibly one of the coolest things I could have found in a mall? Yes, you guessed it. Marvel Uno. I love the after-Christmas sales the holiday calendar stores have because you get games you love at half price. I was one happy adult-sized kid when I broke those cards in on Tuesday night. Along with playing card games, I recently watched a couple of new release films, including "Looper" with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis,...

  • Voluntary solutions the answer

    Kent McManigal CMI columnist

Libertarians often get accused of blaming everything on government. Little old us, picking on big strong government? That's silly. The problem is not government, nor is it crime. The problem is people using theft and aggression against others. To draw a false distinction between these primary sources of theft and aggression in the world is to miss the point entirely. It is to be a part of the problem rather than a part of the solution. Theft and aggression exist, and always will, so I might as well accept it and deal with... Full story
