    On a fixed income since 2008, Sharon Martinez and her husband worried about providing their daughters gifts this Christmas. Martinez said her daughters Destiny, Desirae and Angelina were used to a Christmas with many gifts before a traffic accident in 2007 and a continual spinal problem forced her to have two neck surgeries.   • Youths create holiday cards for overseas troops

    Shiloh Wyatt and his brother Judah spent Tuesday evening using their artistic creativity preparing Christmas cards that could brighten the holiday for U.S. military troops stationed overseas. The Wyatts worked with about four other boys sorting through a variety of colorful art and craft items to paste onto paper cutouts to make the cards. The card-making project was part of the Portales Public Library Tween program, which offers youth ages 9 to 12 years old a chance to explore various themes in an educational environment....

    The last survivor of the Bataan Death March in Curry County returned in good spirits despite spending 3 1/2 years as a prisoner of war, family members said. That was typical of Bud D. Johnston, they said, he always looked on the bright side. In this case he was alive. Johnston, who died Nov. 20 at Retirement Ranch at the age of 95, was among the 1,800 members of the 200th and 515th Coast Guard Artillery Units who were ordered to surrender to Japanese forces on April 9, 1942.... Full story

    One Clovis man died and another was severely burned when they apparently suffered electric shocks Friday while working on a billboard on east Mabry Drive, police said. Timothy J. Krach, 28, of Clovis, was killed and Randy Armstrong, 27, of Clovis, was flown to a Lubbock hospital for treatment, Clovis Police Capt. Patrick Whitney said.
