Cats finish 10th in Amarillo Relays

AMARILLO – Clovis High’s boys finished 10th in a field of 17 teams over the weekend in the Amarillo Relays track meet.

Senior Jeremiah Johnson and junior Sammy Fuentes each posted a second-place finish in the meet, with Johnson going an even 50 feet in shot put for a state-qualifying mark on Friday and Fuentes completing the 1,600 in a time of 4 minutes, 34.17 seconds on Saturday. Meantime, Fuentes accounted for the other points for the Cats with a fourth-place finish in Friday’s 3,200 with a time of 10:03.13.

Amarillo High took team honors with 137 points to 98 for runnerup Lubbock Cooper. The Wildcats finished with 20 points.

CHS boys track coach Mark Sena said his contingent performed well overall.

“The meet was pretty successful in terms of improvement all-around,” he said. “We had quite a few season-best times and a few newcomers come in and perform well.”

Sena said the Cats’ 800 relay team of sophomore John Royal, seniors Kaleb Foggie and Kash Roberts and junior Kyrese Phillips posted a state-qualifying time of three minutes, 32.59 seconds in Friday’s prelims.

“Although they didn’t make the finals on Saturday, they did shave three seconds off our season-best time in that event,” he said.

Clovis squads return to action in Hobbs’ Gene Wells Relays on April 5.
