The Portales school board on Saturday is scheduled to interview four superintendent candidates vying to succeed Johnnie Cain.
Cain has held the position the last 11 years and plans to retire at the end of the school year.
Three of the four candidates for the job already work for Portales Municipal Schools. The fourth candidate is also local with ties to PMS.
Board members also are scheduled to meet Monday and could name a new superintendent at that time.
Monday’s meeting is set for 6 p.m. in the board room of the school administration office. Saturday’s meeting is also at the administration office, starting at 8 a.m. The candidate interviews are all scheduled to be conducted in executive session.
Here are the candidates, with information provided by Cain:
Rick Segovia:
• Currently the Federal Program Director at Portales schools.
• Has been Federal Program Director for seven years.
• Was principal at Lindsey-Steiner Elementary School for 16 years before moving to his current position.
• Has 31 years in education.
Arturo Ontiveros:
• Currently in first year as assistant superintendent of Personnel and Assessment.
• Was Portales High School principal for five years before becoming the assistant superintendent.
• Was an assistant principal at Portales High School for six years before appointment to principal.
• Has 23 years in education.
Sara Hunton:
• Has been the district reading coach and district curriculum coordinator for the past seven years working in Federal Programs.
• Has 19 years in education.
Sharon Rowley:
• Currently principal at Fort Sumner Schools where she has worked eight years.
• Had previously worked in the Portales district and was the assistant principal at Lindsey Steiner Elementary School for 4 1/2 years.
• Has 33 years in education.
