Steers finish perfect district run

BOVINA – The Farwell Steers completed a perfect run through District 2-3A boys play on Tuesday night, pulling away after halftime for a 70-43 victory over Bovina.

Tied with the Mustangs 28-28 at the break, Farwell (23-9, 10-0 district) posted a 42-15 scoring advantage in the final two cantos to stretch its winning streak to 12 games.

Junior Ryder McElroy led the Steers with 18 points, while senior Corey Stancell and sophomore Braddock Foster chipped in 13 apiece. Farwell put 10 players in the scoring column.

For Bovina (12-19, 4-6), seniors Yandel DeLeon and Miguez Lopez finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Both teams are slated to play on Tuesday in the Class 2A bi-district round, the Steers taking on New Deal (11-19) at Littlefield and the Mustangs facing Floydada (23-8). Times and sites are to be announced.

In other boys action on Tuesday:

Gateway Christian 48, Floyd 44 – In a District 4-1A contest at Floyd, the visiting Warriors (8-13, 4-3 district) got off to a 9-2 lead at the quarter and fended off the Broncos (8-12, 2-5).

Senior Noah Gomez tallied 15 points for Gateway while freshman Grady Munson had 13. Senior Isaias Nieto posted 10 points for Floyd.

Melrose 72, Grady 35 – At Grady, junior Chance Brittenum funneled in 13 points to lead four Buffaloes players in double digits in a District 6-1A matchup.

Eleven players scored for the Buffs (20-3, 3-2), with junior Brayden Eldridge adding 12 points and senior Dathan Yeary and sophomore Max Sena notching 10 apiece. Senior Zane Rush put in 11 points for the Bronchos (9-10, 0-5).

In another District 4-1A game, Dora (12-8, 6-1) was awarded a forfeit win over Lake Arthur.

In Tuesday girls games:

Melrose 54, Grady 36 – The Lady Buffs opened an 18-5 lead at the quarter in District 6-1A action at Grady.

Senior Graci Odom paced Melrose (19-4, 3-2) with 13 points, 10 coming in the third quarter and all 13 in the second half. Meantime, senior Kye Saulsberry scored 10 of her 12 points before the intermission, and senior Karlee Elliott and sophomore Skyler Wicker chipped in eight apiece.

For the Lady Bronchos (9-12, 0-5), junior Juanita Ramirez notched 13 points and senior Taylor Foote had 10.

Gateway Christian 47, Floyd 26 – In District 4-1A, sophomore Kadence Garcia had 14 points to lift the Lady Warriors (12-9, 4-2) to the victory.

Senior Jona Baros posted 13 points for the Lady Broncos (3-16, 1-5), while junior Nevaeha Brown had 11.

Meantime, Dora (14-6, 7-0) was awarded a 4-1A forfeit win over Lake Arthur.
