Clovis native wins recycling award

Former Clovis resident Michael Terrell Garrett Jr., owner of GreenWay Recycling in Portland, Ore., recently gained national recognition by receiving the 2024 Recycler of the Year Award from the Construction and Demolition Association.

In a news release from GreenWay, Garrett gives a nod to his days in Clovis.

"Growing up around my family's farm, ranch and grain elevator businesses in Clovis gave me many lessons that shaped my life in significant ways," he said.

"I got comfortable with machines that sort material."

According to the release:

Garrett said that heritage and knack for innovation was key for the recent $7 million rebuild of GreenWay's mixed construction and demolition sorting and processing facility.

Garrett's career in Oregon started with refurbishing older buildings, eventually acquiring a garbage hauling company.

GreenWay Recycling operates a mixed construction and demolition sorting and processing facility that is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

He still visits eastern New Mexico and said he is proud that his 83-year old father, Michael Garrett, has been practicing law for 58 years.

"What I love about New Mexico is simple: It just feels like home," Michael Garrett Jr. said.
