FRIDAY PREPS: Lady Coyotes play Logan tough in loss

DORA – Dora’s girls pushed Class 1A No. 4 Logan hard most of the way before the Lady Coyotes dropped a 70-61 decision on Friday night.

Sophomore Desta Rosa led three players in double digits for the Lady Longhorns (13-7) with 24 points, while senior Camryn Cantrell had 12 – including 10 in the first half – and senior Lizzy Horner added 11. Logan’s losses have come to teams with a combined record of 95-17.

Logan opened nine-point halftime lead with a 14-7 run in the second stanza. Sophomore Dakota Jones led four players in double digits with 15 points for the Lady Coyotes (10-6), ranked 10th in 1A, while senior Faith Jasso and junior Justice Deason added 12 apiece and freshman Karen Inge scored 11.

In other girls action on Friday night:

Farwell 88, Bovina 9 – The host Lady Blue (26-3, 7-0 District 3-1A), ranked second in Texas Class 2A by MaxPreps, overwhelmed the Fillies (6-15, 2-5), rolling to a 28-0 lead at the quarter.

Eight players scored for Farwell, including junior Makylee Baldwin with 24 points, senior Chloee Whitten with 13 and juniors Bella Jaime and Landri Richey with 12 and 10, respectively.

Gateway Christian 50, Floyd 21 – At Roswell, the Lady Warriors built a 23-8 halftime lead and posted a District 4-1A victory over the Lady Broncos.

Gateway Christian (9-6, 1-0) was led by 13 points from sophomore Kadence Garcia and 10 from junior Allyssa Fox. For Floyd (2-12, 0-2), senior Jona Baros tallied seven points and senior Sherlyn Borrego netted six.

On the boys side on Friday:

Gateway Christian 57, Floyd 48 – At Roswell, the Warriors started fast with a 26-point first quarter, but the Broncos came back to make a game of it, pulling within a point three times in the second half in the District 4-1A tilt.

Sophomore Victor Oaxaca led Gateway (6-9, 1-0 district) with 14 points, while freshman Grady Munson had 12 and junior Ethaniel Wigley 10. Floyd (6-8, 0-2) got 11 points each from senior Isaias Nieto and sophomore Edwin Gallegos, and eight from senior Benton Cain.

Logan 63, Dora 23 – The homestanding Coyotes played Class 1A’s top-ranked team by MaxPreps close into the second quarter before the Longhorns (17-2) ran away.

Sophomore Mason Wallin notched 21 points and junior Diego Sanchez collected 14 for Logan. High scorers for Dora (10-7) were senior Cole Kircher with nine and junior Roddy Neal with seven.

Farwell 61, Bovina 28 – In District 3-2A contest at Farwell, the Steers extended their winning streak to seven as junior Ryder McElroy scored 26 points.

Sophomore Braddock Foster tallied 14 and senior Cesar Snyder 13 for district-leading Farwell (18-9, 5-0). Meantime, the Mustangs (10-16, 2-3) got eight points apiece from senior Miguel Lopez and freshman Isaac Tavera.
