Lady Broncos defeat San Jon, notch first victory of season

FLOYD – Junior Nevaeha Brown and senior Jona Baros combined for 32 points on Friday night, and Floyd's girls picked up their first win of the season with a 41-38 triumph over San Jon.

Brown scored 17 points and Baros added 15 for the Lady Broncos (1-6), who erased a seven-point halftime deficit with a 16-9 surge in the third frame.

Senior Sarah Archuleta led the Lady Coyotes (1-5) with 15 points.

In the boys' half of the twin bill, Floyd overwhelmed the Coyotes from the start and rolled to a 61-14 win.

Nine players scored for the Broncos (4-4), led by sophomore Issak Bustamante with 13 and seniors Drew Essary with 12 and Isaias Nieto with 10. For San Jon (0-3), sophomore Truitt Sallee had eight points.

In girls tournament play this week:

Lubbock Caprock Classic – Farwell, ranked fifth in Texas Class 2A by MaxPreps, reached the tournament finals on Friday with wins over Slaton 58-50 and over Class 1A No. 2 Borden County. The Lady Blue was slated to take Muenster (17-4) in Saturday's noon (CST) title tilt.

Junior Landri Richey had a big day for the Lady Blue (17-2), tallying a personal-best 27 points against Slaton – 23 in the first three stanzas – and adding 23 more in the win over the Gail, Texas-based Lady Coyotes (7-3). Junior Makylee Baldwin chipped in 10 in the latter contest.

Kolbi McCord tallied 19 points and Justyne Zapata 16 for Slaton (13-3). Senior Kenzie White netted 10 points for Borden County.

Farwell got off to fast starts in both games, leading 13-4 against Slaton, ranked ninth in Texas Class 3A, and 20-7 against Borden County after one quarter.

The Lady Blue opened play on Thursday with a 40-16 drubbing of Texline. Farwell opened a 14-4 lead at the quarter and steadily pulled away behind 12 points from Baldwin and 10 from senior Chloee Whitten.

For the Lady Tornadoes (13-5), senior Gloria Fernandez posted five points.

In boys tournaments:

Wildcat Classic, Littlefield – Hale Center junior Cade Sierra hit a 3-point basket at the buzzer and the Owls (8-6) handed Farwell a heartbreaking 58-57 loss in the third-place game of the 11-team event.

Junior Aidan Baldridge scored 18 points for Hale Center, while the Steers (10-8) got 22 points from junior Ryder McElroy and 15 from senior Cesar Snyder.

Farwell won its first two games in the tournament before dropping a 58-53 overtime decision to New Home in Thursday's semifinal clash.

The teams traded dominating quarters. Farwell carried a 42-31 lead into the final period before the Leopards ran off 18 unanswered points for a seven-point lead with about two minutes to go.

The Steers then forced overtime with the final seven points of regulation, but New Home regained control in the extra session. Senior Jackson Martinez scored 19 points for the Leopards, and junior Caleb Cook added 18.

Farwell put three players in double figures – sophomore Braddock Foster with 17, Snyder with 14 and senior Corey Stancell with 10.

On Wednesday, the Steers won their opening-round tilt over Lubbock Roosevelt 64-40 behind 13 points each from Snyder and McElroy and 11 from Foster. Leading by seven, Farwell broke it open by outscoring the Eagles 23-6 in the final segment.

Junior Nate Casarez had 12 points for Roosevelt (5-7), while senior Ethan Cervantes added 10.

Earlier on Thursday, the Steers used another big fourth quarter to subdue Olton 51-41, outscoring the Mustangs 20-9 over the last eight minutes. Snyder tallied eight points and sophomore Hudson Agee went 7-for-8 from the foul line in the period for Farwell.

McElroy was the game's high scorer with 16 points. Senior Jimmy Munoz had 12 points for Olton (7-8).

Groom Holiday tournament – Wheeler overcame a five-point halftime deficit to outlast Bovina 60-49 on Friday night in a semifinal matchup.

Bovina (6-11), losing for just the second time in eight games, built a 29-24 lead at the break. Wheeler (13-3) overhauled the Mustangs by outscoring them by eight points in each of the final two cantos.

Seniors Levi Ashurst and Austin Adkins each had two of Wheeler's six 3-point baskets and both finished with 14 points, while three others had at least eight points.

For the Mustangs, senior Miguel Lopez led the way in a losing effort with 21 tallies.

Bovina won twice on Thursday's opening day of the event, blowing out McLean 71-34 and edging Groom 35-34.

Lopez had a pair of 3-pointers and finished with a personal-best 25 points against McLean. Junior Jairo Mares and freshman Isaac Tavera each added 11 tallies, including three 3s for Tavera.

For the Tigers (2-11), junior Jayvon Salazar had eight points.

The Mustangs survived a 3-for-11 performance from the foul line against Groom, outscoring the Tigers 13-9 in the final stanza to erase a three-point deficit. Lopez again led the team with 14 points, while Groom (4-9) was paced by 20 points from senior Ryan Weinheimer.
