Paw prints: Portales hopes to establish dog park

The city of Portales has received a $997,000 quality of life grant to better its economic development.

One of the major projects the grant will be used for is establishing a dog park in La Buena Vida Park, said Portales Community Services Director Kelly McClellan.

Public Infrastructure Projects Coordinator Administrator Jo McVey said it has yet to be decided how much of the grant will be dedicated to the dog park, but she plans on making a park that is enjoyed by the community.

“We would like to give something for the community to do and a safe place for the animals to run, while trying to keep and encourage businesses to stay with Portales,” McClellan said.

McClellan said the goal of the project is to help residents stay within the city, instead of driving out to Clovis to play with their pets. She said the dog park will encourage pet owners to spend their day-to-day lives within their community.

The project will consist of two separate divisions for small and big dogs. McClellan is aiming to install several features, including water fountains for owners and their pets, community trash cans, benches, and doggy disposal areas.

“The La Buena Vida Park is a pretty good sized park, so we’re hoping to get a good amount of it dedicated to the dog park,” McClellan said.

McClellan said the grant division is still figuring out planning and zoning and is looking forward to presenting design plans to the city in January.

McVey said the remaining funds will be used to establish an amphitheater and multisport court in City Park. The funds will also be used to improve and remodel 3D landscaping, handicap-accessible walking paths and lighting to all Portales’ parks.

“I was wanting to spread it out, so some love goes to a couple of different parks. I wanted to go to several different areas, instead of focusing on one park,” McVey said.

McClellan said the dog park will come with a list of restrictions and rules, to better protect the public and their furry companions.

The funds will have to be spent by June, Mcvey said. The construction of the dog park is expected to begin in January or February.
