Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Clovis resident to join Rose Parade

We’ve all seen the Rose Parade on TV. A Clovis couple will be watching in person in Pasadena, Calif., on Monday – and Roger Cherry will be in it.

Suzie and Roger Cherry, actively involved in Clovis’ Lions Club, recently entered a raffle during a district Lions Club meeting in Gallup. That’s how they won their trip.

The Cherrys said they will be allowed to see where parade judging takes place and they can help decorate the Lions Club float that will be part of Monday’s event.

Roger’s raffle ticket gives him a seat on the float.

The Lions Club International, founded in Indiana in 1916, is perhaps best known for its efforts to combat blindness around the world.

The Cherrys, in fact, said they joined the Lions so they could help give back to their community through programs like Kidsight, which helps school children who need help paying for glasses and eye exams.

Lions also volunteer their time at the Curry County Fair every year, Suzie Cherry said.

“You see the results firsthand of what they have done. That’s what really impacted us,” she said.

Having a float in the Rose Parade shows people what the Lions Club is and how they help serve others, Suzie Cherry said.
