CHS squads finish second, third

CARLSBAD – Clovis High's swimming teams finished the pre-holiday portion of their schedule on Saturday in the Carlsbad Holiday Invitational, with the boys finishing second in final team standings while the girls came in third.

Hobbs took the boys' team title with 572 points to 394 for the Wildcats. On the girls side, Clovis finished with 412 ½ points to trail Artesia (461) and Carlsbad (454).

Clovis squads return to action with a two-day meet on Jan. 5-6 at Andrews, Texas. They'll spend the next couple of weeks in training, co-coach Elliot Ford said.

"We're excited to get through that and then get on to Andrews," Ford said. "We've got a lot of hard work ahead over the next couple of weeks."

Saturday's meet was highlighted by four wins from senior Porter Kidd for the boys, including legs on the 200 medley (1 minute, 47.62 seconds) and 400 freestyle (3:36.03) relays. He also took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:50.68) and 50 freestyle (22.62 seconds) events.

For the Lady Wildcats, freshman Molly Kidd – Porter's sister – also had a solid meet. She posted the Lady Cats' only event win of the day with a time of 2:08.60 in the 200 freestyle – senior Brynn Longley was tied for second in the event (2:17.53) – and led a 2-3-4-5 Clovis finish in the 100 freestyle at 1:00.35.

In addition, Molly Kidd led off the Lady Cats 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays, which finished second (1:57.24) and third (4:09.15), respectively.

Senior Kriday Andiboina was a new state qualifier for the boys, posting a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.15.

"This meet we had kids swim a lot of things they don't normally swim," Ford said. "We shuffled the relays to get them used to swimming different strokes."

Senior Ricky Southern swam on the two first-place relays and posted second-place finishes for the Cats in the 100 butterfly (1:02.05) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.08). Senior Matthew Del Toro also swam a leg on the 400 freestyle relay while placing second in the 200 individual medley (2:22.17) and third in the 100 freestyle (55.79).

The Lady Cats were second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.24) and third in the 200 medley relay (2:06.62) and the 400 freestyle relay (4:09.15). The CHS second team came in fourth in the latter event.
