Police: Homeowner shoots man he says is an intruder

A Clovis homeowner on Monday night shot a man he said was an intruder, alleged to have broken into his home, police said.

The shooting victim late last week was listed in stable but critical condition in a Lubbock-area hospital, police said.

Police did not release the names of the homeowner or the alleged intruder. No charges had been filed as of Friday.

The incident happened about 11 p.m. Monday on Rosa Boulevard.

According to a police news release:

The homeowner called 911 reporting someone was trying to break into the home. “Officers were immediately dispatched to the home. While officers were responding, the homeowner called 911 again stating the person had forced their way into their home and the caller said they shot the intruder.”

Police detectives learned the homeowner was awakened by someone banging on his front door. The homeowner said he warned the person he was armed with a gun and would shoot them if they came into the home.

“Moments later, the person kicked the homeowner’s front door open and entered their home,” according to the news release.

“The homeowner again warned the person he was armed. Worrying about their safety, as well as for others inside the home, the homeowner fired one round at the person causing him to fall to the ground. The homeowner then said he called 911 again telling them they shot the person and to send an ambulance.”

The homeowner told police he did not know the intruder.
