Ropes tops Bovina in boys opener

BOVINA – Senior Landon Nale paced four Ropes players in double digits with 15 points Friday night, and the Eagles posted a 71-26 boys victory over Bovina in the season opener for both squads.

Freshman Branson Simental added 15 points while junior Brennan Bearden and sophomore Kade Franklin followed with 12 and 10, respectively.

Four players finished between five and seven points for the Mustangs, led by freshman Eric Solis.

Lady Mules drop pair in tourney – Muleshoe’s girls absorbed losses to Sudan 68-35 in Thursday’s quarterfinals and to Sundown 77-42 in Friday’s consolation semifinals in an eight-team tournament hosted by Abernathy.

The Lady Mules (1-5) were slated to face Olton in Saturday’s morning’s seventh-place game.

Sudan (4-2), which lost to Nazareth in Friday’s championship semifinals, scored the first nine points and led 24-9 at the quarter, putting Muleshoe in a hole from which it could not escape.

Seniors Melo Rodriguez (20) and Blessy Montes (18) combined for more than half the scoring for the Hornettes against Muleshoe. Meantime, the Lady Mules got 10 points from senior Payton Otwell.

In Friday’s tilt, Sundown (3-3) opened a 26-point halftime lead and won big behind 41 points from junior Allie McCormick. Muleshoe junior Megan Moran posted her personal-best outing with 24 points for the Lady Mules.

In girls matchups on Tuesday:

Farwell 60, Lubbock Liberty 21 – At Farwell, the Lady Blue rolled to a 17-7 lead at the quarter and cruised from there against the Class 3A Patriots (1-3), who are a first-year program.

Junior Makylee Baldwin led a balanced attack for Farwell (2-1) with 14 points. Senor Chloee Whitten and junior Natalie Wade also reached double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Hereford 39, Muleshoe 25 – At Muleshoe, the Lady Whitefaces (1-0) erased a one-point deficit after the first quarter, limiting the Lady Mules to just 14 points over the final three stanzas.

Senor Azalea Alaniz scored 10 points to pace Hereford, while Moran led all scorers with 13 points for Muleshoe.
