Holiday season takes on new meaning

It’s 39 weeks now … and still pregnant. Baby girl is taking her sweet time; or maybe I’m just getting slightly impatient.

The holiday season is upon us and, this year, all of these special gatherings mean so much more. While I still don’t know when she will make her arrival, I’m hopeful it will be before Thanksgiving so we can spend it with her.

I’ve recently put out all my Christmas decorations because I know that once she gets here, I’ll be a little too busy to worry about that. I also just love the idea of her coming home to all the Christmas joy.

I think about Christmas when I was a child, and something you grow up to realize is that parents truly are the ones responsible for creating the magic in Christmas. We learn about the birth of Jesus and why that’s the reason for celebration. But of course, all of the presents, cookies and hot cocoa making, lights, wonder and anticipation ... that was all so magical because of our parents.

I’m excited to take on that role for my children. And even though she won’t remember anything from this Christmas, I know I’ll always remember it as my first Christmas as a mom.

Every day I wake up and think, “Could today be the day?”

Waiting for her arrival feels like Christmas to me. I have no idea when she will decide to come, but every day feels like the night before Christmas morning. I know I’m about to receive the greatest gift I’ll ever get, and that’s the gift of motherhood.

I’m trying to go about like normal, but with everything packed and ready, the anticipation is taking over. Just like waiting for Christmas. I know what everyone means now when they say the last few weeks really drag on the most.

As far as how I’m feeling ... the Braxton Hicks are getting very consistent throughout the day. I will be celebrating my 24th birthday on Thursday in Lubbock, at my baby appointment. That is of course if she decides to stay put for a few more days.

I’m praying that the next column I write will be announcing her arrival.
