Tucson - Helen Freida Grandy, 88, passed away on October 29, 2023 surrounded by
her family at home in Tucson, AZ. Helen was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in June 2023 and true to form, she remained positive and fought bravely until the end. She stayed in touch with her loved ones through FaceTime and phone calls, telling people she loved them until the last hours of her life.
Helen was born December 16, 1934 in Grand Island, NE to Peter and Anna Mohr. Helen is survived by her daughters Sheila Gentry, Dolly Hughes, Suzy O'Rourke (Tony), Debbie Sawatzky and son Ace Grandy. She was grandmother to 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Helen was known for her contagious laughter, her dedication to her family, and her thoughtful nature. Helen had a passion for connecting with others and maintaining relationships. She loved sending birthday and thank you cards, always taking the time to make people feel special. She also enjoyed watching sports with her husband, particularly cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Social media, especially Facebook, allowed her to stay connected with friends and loved ones over the years.
Helen was devoted to taking incredible care of her husband of 68 years, Ash. She always made it her highest priority to ensure his happiness and well-being. After she passed, Ash said she wouldn't have to wait long for him to join
her, he kept his word and died just three days later.
Helen was preceded in death by her brothers Ernest Mohr, Edward Mohr, and sisters Elizabeth Engquist and Elsie Shanks. She was also preceded by her grandson Eric Gentry, great-grandson Nolan Blauw, and son-in-law Tony O'Rourke.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Helen Grandy will be held at Hope Church in Tucson, AZ on December 16, 2023. This gathering will serve as a time for family and friends to come together, sharing memories and paying tribute to a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many.
