Detention center officers arrested for contraband

Two Roosevelt County Detention Center officers have been arrested for bringing contraband to inmates at the detention center, court records show.

Officer Daejon Rae Coronado, 20, and Heather Brockman, 34, were reported by Lt. Danion Rich for bringing contraband to the jail. Video footage shows Coronado delivering contraband to inmate Dylan Hendren, records show.

According to court documents:

The investigation led to a subsequent shakedown of Hendren’s room and bunk, where RCDC officers found two syringes and suspected suboxone, which is a controlled substance. There were also jail phone calls that revealed the suspects were using CashApp to facilitate drug payments to Coronado for delivery.

Coronado was supposed to deliver the contraband in exchange for $300, then deliver it to Hendren or his co-conspirator and inmate Marc Hazelton.

Hendren would then take the contraband and split it along with other inmates, who were later tested positive for both heroin and suboxone. Other evidence officers collected was a journal Hendren possessed, which had Coronado’s CashApp, labeling him “Homie in Dark” information along with prices for the contraband.

Within the journal Hendren also wrote how “he runs the jail from the inside” and how he convinced Coronado to be a part of the operation.

On Oct. 4 video footage showed Hazelton being escorted by officer Brockman to the medical room after being “anxious about something” and unable to stand still within his day room. Brockman had then entered the medical room with Hazelton and closed the door, according to the report it is “rare and suspicious” for detention officers to stay in the room with the inmate.

Coronado had asked Brockman to deliver a THC vape to Hazelton. Brockman and Coronado had communicated often, most of the messages and call history were deleted by Coronado.

After Coronado’s arrest, Brockman became “very nervous and her behavior seemed erratic” to her supervisors. Brockman began applying for other jobs and refused to work the floor in the facility.

Brockman, booked on Nov. 7, is charged with accessory to bringing contraband into places of imprisonment and conspiracy to commit a felony, bringing contraband into places of imprisonment.

Coronado, booked on Oct. 19, is charged with trafficking controlled substances, conspiracy to commit trafficking controlled substances and bringing contraband into places of imprisonment.

Brockman and Coronado have both been released on bond.
