ENMU posts victory over USW

Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team stepped outside Lone Star Conference play on Monday night and snapped its 12-match losing streak with a 25-19, 25-11, 25-17 triumph over winless University of the Southwest (0-11) at Greyhound Arena.

It was the Greyhounds' first victory since a 3-0 sweep of the Mustangs in Hobbs on Sept. 18.

Senior outside hitters Mikaela Garvin and Halle Sanders had eight kills apiece for the Hounds (9-17). Senior middle blocker Gracelyn Stubbs added 16 assists ad sophomore setter Kayla Ison had 12, while Sanders senior libero Getsemani Carrasco each had nine digs.

This weekend, the Hounds continue an eight-match homestand, returning to LSC action to face Cameron at 6 p.m. on Friday and West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Texas A&M-Kingsville 3, ENMU 1 (volleyball, Saturday) – ENMU kept the match going with a tight third-set win, but the Javelinas rallied in Game 4 to close out the match and keep the Hounds winless in conference play (0-12).

Senior outside hitter Jackie Alanis and sophomore outside hitter Rylan Pollard posted double-doubles for the Javelinas (14-6, 6-2), with Jackson collecting 17 kills and 12 digs and Pollard posting 14 kills and 25 assists. Sophomore setter Elisa Carli added a team-high 29 assists.

Meantime, Stubbs earned her second triple-double of the campaign with 14 kills, 18 assists and 10 digs for the Hounds. She also had six total blocks (one solo).

Garvin and fellow senior outside hitter Kali Nelson added 14 and 10 kills, respectively, while Ison had a team-high 19 assists and Carrasco notched 19 digs.

Down two sets, the Hounds used an early 7-0 run for an 8-4 lead in Game 3. Kingsville rallied to tie it at 24-24, but the Hounds closed out the set with a kill from Nelson and an ace from senior outside hitter Halle Sanders. ENMU then led 11-6 and 21-19 in Game 4, but the Javelinas scored six of the final eight points to close out the match.

The Hounds continue an eight-match home streak this weekend with league tilts at 6 p.m. on Friday against Cameron and at 2 p.m. on Saturday against West Texas A&M.

ENMU squads 13th – The Hounds hosted the LSC championships on campus on Saturday, finishing 13th out of 13 teams on the men's side and 13th out of 14 for the women.

West Texas A&M swept both team titles, posting a perfect score of 15 points in the men's division and 20 points in women's competition for the Lady Buffs' first league championship in 10 years.

Dallas Baptist was second on the men's side with 79 points to 82 for Oklahoma Christian and 98 for Western New Mexico, while ENMU's tally was 392. Behind WT for the women were Dallas Baptist (50), Midwestern State (112) and St. Edward's (147), with the Hounds at 352 to beat out Texas-Permian Basin (381).

Senior William Amponsah led the Buffaloes to their 11th consecutive men's crown with a time of 23 minutes, 35.57 seconds over eight kilometers. WT took the top six places in the event.

Freshman Matthew Guerra was ENMU's top performer, coming in 51st in 27:31.56.

WT held the top three and six of the top nine finishes in the 6K women's race en route to its first team title in 10 years, led by senior Eleonora Curtabbi in 20:27.91. Leading the way for the Hounds were seniors Maritza Alvarez, 53rd in 25:03.07, and Kaylyn De La Rosa, 63rd in 25:22.72.

Midwestern State 1, ENMU (men's soccer, Saturday) – At Wichita Falls, Texas, the unbeaten and second-ranked Mustangs (14-0-1, 6-0 LSC) needed a late goal to turn back the feisty Hounds.

Senior forward Mere Escobar took advantage of an indirect kick within the penalty box to score the game's lone tally in the 79th minute of play for the Mustangs, who have won 12 in a row to match their longest winning streak since their 2010 squad opened the season with 12 consecutive Ws. MSU outshot the Hounds for the match 6-1 on goal.

Despite the loss, ENMU (4-6-4, 2-2-2), projected for last place in the 10-team circuit in preseason, remained tied for third place in the LSC standings with Oklahoma Christian (3-6-6, 2-2-2).

ENMU plays its final regular-season road match at Texas A&M International tonight. They close the campaign with 7 p.m. home outings against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday and Texas-Tyler next Wednesday.

Texas A&M International 2, ENMU 0 (women's soccer, Saturday) – At Laredo, Texas, the homestanding Dustdevils (6-3-5, 4-2-3 LSC) tallied once in each half to hand the Hounds (1-10-1, 0-8-1) their seventh consecutive setback.

Senior defender Sammy Hecht scored in the 23rd minute off an assist from junior defender Siera Clark, and senior Louise Atkinson added an insurance tally in the 68th minute. Senior goalkeeper Samantha Jeffries had six saves in the contest for ENMU.

The Hounds have three matches remaining, beginning with a trip to Odessa on Wednesday to face Texas-Permian Basin. They will host Dallas Baptist in a 1 p.m. start on Saturday before visiting West Texas A&M next Tuesday.
