Cats, Lady Cats compete in Albuquerque Extravaganza

ALBUQUERQUE – Clovis High junior Sammy Fuentes posted a time of 17 minutes, 9.24 seconds over five kilometers to place 18th in a field of 154 runners in the Class 5A boys division of Saturday’s Albuquerque Academy cross country race.

Rio Rancho, led by individual winner Charlie Vause in 15:32.41, captured team honors with 32 points to 73 for Rio Rancho Cleveland. CHS was 15th out of 20 teams with 459 points while among District 4-5A rivals, Hobbs took seventh place at 199, Carlsbad was 10th at 358 and Roswell High placed 18th at 496.

Other performances for the Wildcats include eighth-grader Adrian Surita, 79th in 18:41.12; junior Rudy Ledezma, 114th in 20:00.65; freshman Connor McGuiggan, 126th in 20.22: 40; eighth-grader Marques Lippman, 130th in 20:28.64, and eighth-grader Ryder Bonney, 136th in 20:46.32.

For the girls, CHS was seventh as a team with 198 points, beating out Hobbs (10th at 293) and Carlsbad (17th at 563), while Roswell High did not field a full squad.

Rio Rancho dominated the event, finishing with 41 points to 91 for La Cueva in a field of 18 full teams. Eldorado eighth-grader Gianna Rahmer was the individual winner among 154 contestants in 17:44.96 as the Rams posted five of the top 11 times.

Freshman Brooke Newcomer paced the Lady Wildcats, placing 27th in 21:36.59, while eighth-grader Christina Waltrip came in 37th in 21:55.17 and junior Gabrielle Foggie 40th in 21:59.14.

Rounding out the squad were eighth-grader Rosalia Morales, 42nd in 22:05.20; senior Olumachi Oparaiheoma-Anaele, 59th in 22:39.12; sophomore Jarelly Navarrete, 61st in 22:43.04; junior Kira Tree, 84th in 23:19.36, and sophomore Joselyn Foggie, 89th in 23:33.92.

Clovis squads finish the regular campaign with a meet in Santa Rosa on Saturday. The district meet is slate for Carlsbad on Nov. 3.
