Publisher's journal: A number of toys, and rumors of fall

News, notes and trivia by the numbers:

4: Number of arrests recorded by New Mexico State Police at last month’s State Fair in Albuquerque. All four arrests were for misdemeanor crimes.

Also of note: “(N)o vehicles were stolen from the 230 acres of Expo property” during the fair, according to a police news release.

Maybe we can visit Albuquerque and do fun stuff sometimes.

9: Days until Eastern New Mexico University hosts First Amendment Day in the Sandia Room at the Campus Union Building on the Portales campus.

One of the panel discussions will focus on “the difference between hate speech and free speech and how to keep yourself on the latter side.”

Hopefully, the place will be crawling with politicians who need this training.

Sessions begin at 11 a.m. and run through 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.

30: That’s how many Newspapers in Education newspapers are sent to Rhonda Stevens’ reading classes each week at the junior high in Muleshoe. (Yes, that is the Mrs. Stevens.)

One student enjoys reading the obituaries. Another has requested more crime news. Evelyn Regalado was among players who “Beat the Davids” in the newspaper’s football contest last week.

Teachers can sign up to receive free NIE newspapers each week by calling The News Circulation Director Cindy Cole at 575-763-3431.

50: Years ago the Evel Knievel stunt-cycle appeared on Christmas toy shelves across the country.

Other popular toys in 1973: Walkie-talkie sets, Hoppity Hops, View Masters, transistor radios, Easy Bake Ovens, Battleship games and Silly Putty.

98: The highest temperature recorded at the Agricultural Science Center north of Clovis during the month of September this year.

The month saw 11 days with temps at 90 or above, but only one of them was after Sept. 10.

Sept. 13 saw a high of 67 degrees.

Fall. Finally.

$167,853.81: That’s how much money Clovis native Shad Mayfield has won so far this year on the pro rodeo circuit. The tie-down roper is third in the world standings behind Texan Riley Webb and Haven Meged of Miles City, Mont.

Mayfield finished second a year ago, earning nearly $800,000.

Highlights of his season so far, according to the prorodeo.com website:

• Won the Santa Rosa Roundup in Vernon, Texas

• Won the Liberty Hill (Texas) Fair and Rodeo

• Won the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte, Neb.

• Won the Reno, Nev., Rodeo

• Won the Kildeer, N.D., Mountain Roundup

• Won the Cheney, Wash., Rodeo
