ARTESIA – Artesia scored a pair of first-half goals on Saturday and the Bulldogs made them stand up for a 2-0 boys soccer victory over Clovis High.
Junior midfielder Othoniel Alvidrez and sophomore defender Moises Corza scored the goals for the Bulldogs (5-4-1). Junior midfielder Luis Torres had an assist on each goal. Artesia had an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal over the Cats (2-9), who dropped their fourth match in a row.
Clovis was slated to return to action on Tuesday, hosting Portales High at Leon Williams Stadium. Next up for the Cats is a Saturday contest at Belen.
New Mexico Military 2, Portales 1 (boys, Saturday) – At Portales, senior midfielder Humberto Valdez tallied with about eight minutes left in the first half to put NMMI (5-2) in front and the Colts prevailed through a scoreless second segment.
Senior midfielder David Portugal got NMMI on the board first in the second minute of the contest. The Rams (0-3-1) tied it when junior midfielder Gabriel Duran scored off an assist from senior forward/midfielder Antonio Garcia in the 26th minute.
“Those guys played with precision,” Rams coach Dustin Harden said of his squad. “I’m proud of the way they played. They’re getting better each and every game.”
After Tuesday’s match at Clovis, the Rams return to action on Thursday at Ruidoso. They host Santa Fe-based Academy for Technology & The Classics on Saturday.
Cross country meet canceled – Clovis High was slated to participate in Saturday’s Lubbock Christian Invitational, but heavy rains the night before flooded the course and the meet was cancelled.
The next outing for the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats is on Saturday in the Carlsbad Invitational.
