ENMU planning heritage events

Eastern New Mexico University has planned a month of events that began on Friday to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month

Events music and educational events to recognize the contribution of Hispanic Americans to the nation’s history.

The month-long celebration will include a “Sombrero Craft Night,” cooking lessons for queso birria tacos, a flamenco demonstration, henna art and a Flamenco performances and demonstrtions, according to a press release from John Houser, ENMU’s assistant vice president of marketing and communications.

“ENMU is very fortunate to have Hispanic students willing to share their culture, knowledge, and background with faculty, staff, students, and community,” Diana Cordova, ENMU multicultural affairs director, said in the release. “The Department of Hispanic Affairs is student-run, and the student-staff researched and programmed all these fabulous speakers and cultural events. I feel that it is essential for all individuals to share and appreciate where we come from for a better understanding and love for humanity.”

The release states the department of Hispanic affairs will also be hosting many guest lectures for the celebration, which include presentations such as “Life on the Border” by Gabriela Moreno, Ph.D, “Promoting Health and Wellness in Hispanic Home and Community,” by Richard Guerra, Ph. D, and “Raramuri: The Foot Runners” by Diana Molina.

ENMU’s event will end on Thursday, Oct. 19, with a live Flamenco performance where guests will be introduced to an evening of music and dance by flamenco artists. The release states all events hosted will be open to the public and ENMU community.
