BOVINA – Bovina survived a quick gut-punch by Seagraves on Thursday night and went on to beat the Eagles 24-18, squaring its record for the season at 1-1.
Junior Julian Munoz stunned the home crowd by taking the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Seagraves then opened an 18-8 lead with second-quarter TD passes from 6-foot-3, 155-pound senior quarterback Jace Humphries to sophomore tight end Hugo Rascon, covering 38 and 17 yards.
The Eagles, though, missed on all three conversion attempts – a kick and two passes.
The Mustangs used some big plays of their own, including a 93-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Daniel Herrera to senior Miguel Lopez in the first quarter and an 80-yard run by senior Angel Lara late in the half.
With Seagraves (0-2) leading 18-16, Herrera put Bovina in front for good with a 2-yard run in the third quarter, then added a 2-point conversion pass to Lara.
Bovina posted a 350-271 edge in total yardage. Lara carried 16 times for 150 yards while Herrera rushed for 51 yards and completed 6-of-15 passes for 134 – all to Lopez.
The Mustangs travel to Lubbock Christian for a 7 p.m. (CDT) contest on Friday.
In Texas area games on Friday night:
Farwell 34, Vega 0 – Senior running back Corey Stancell and junior quarterback Jonathan Armstrong ran for two touchdowns apiece and the Steers (2-0) broke open their game at Vega with a 20-point third quarter.
Stancell scored on runs of 18 yards in the opening stanza and 66 yards in the second frame for a 14-0 lead at the intermission. Armstrong went in from 9 and 24 yards in the third quarter, then found junior Ryder McElr9oy on a 27-yard scoring pass.
Stancell finished with 21 carries for 218 yards for Farwell, which outgained the Longhorns overall 449-126. Armstrong carried nine times for 91 yards and completed 12-of-19 passes for 103 yards.
Senior Jackson Wilbourn, who went 4-for-5 on PAT kicks, grabbed seven passes for 45 yards while McElroy caught three for 59.
Farwell’s next outing is a 7 p.m. (CDT) kickoff on Friday at Sundown.
Muleshoe 48, Lamesa 6 – At Muleshoe, the Mules opened a 41-0 halftime lead and blanked the Tornadoes until the final stanza.
Junior quarterback Nathan Martens went 17-for-18 passing for 272 yards, with scoring tosses to juniors Yahir Quezada and Mauricio Herrera, as Muleshoe (2-0) piled up a 445-202 margin in total offense. Herrera led all receivers with eight catches for 143 yards.
Meantime, sophomore Josue Sigala carried just nine times for 120 yards and three TDs against the Tornadoes (0-2).
The Mules are back in action on Friday with a 7 p.m. (CDT) start at Friona.
