Something to do: Peaches, tacos and tequila mark calendar

Hey everyone, my name is Autumn, and I am new in town, possibly like some of you reading this right now.

I am writing this column to suggest some fun or exciting activities for your free time. And even if you have been living here for many years, I hope this column will inspire you to rediscover our region of New Mexico and beyond.

n If you’re looking for something fun, free of charge, and local this weekend, consider heading out to Ned Houk Park on Highway 209 North, where you can find a disc golf course, ATV and horse trails, a lake stocked for recreational fishing, picnic areas, playground equipment, and basketball and volleyball courts (no net provided). A herd of buffalo also roams part of the grounds in an enclosed space, so it’s safe for you and them. The park is closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. You might consider going earlier or later in the day to beat the heat, but many trees provide good shade, or just bring a bunch of super soakers and have a good old-fashioned water fight. Bring plenty of water, and of course, wear sunscreen.

n If I could do anything this weekend, I would make the almost five-hour trek down to Abiquiu, home to Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch, where they are holding a music festival called Blossoms & Bones on her famous property. It’s a two-day music festival where you can camp, hike, swim, horseback ride, and listen to some fantastic music in one of the most stunning landscapes. One of the performing groups is Toro y Moi on Saturday. I love them and want to go just for them alone. You can find more information about the festival that will take place Friday and Saturday at ghostranchmusicfest.com .

n Another exciting upcoming event this weekend is the Peach Festival in Texico hosted by Five Heart Farms at 371 Curry Road 10. Saturday’s activities run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Entry is $5 for ages 10 and up. Pets are allowed on leashes, but no animals in the flower area, please. The event is a collaboration between Five Heart Farms and Palisade Peaches, where there will be peach everything -- peach cocktails made by Roosevelt Brewery to peach donuts by Daylight Donuts. There will also be boxes of fresh peaches for sale, vendors for shopping, and live entertainment.

n Also, this weekend is the Tacos & Tequila Music Festival Saturday in Lubbock at the Lone Star Event Center at 602 E. 19th. Along with a “top-notch food truck lineup,” will be a Black Sheep Tequila Margarita Bar and musical performances by Incubus, Third Eye Blind, Badflower, and Paris Jackson. The event starts at 1 p.m. (MDT). Find tickets and more information at tacosandtequilamusicfestival.com .

I hope these events add some pizzazz to your weekend, and if you have any hunches on upcoming events that are fun for all, please drop me a line.
