When was the last time Clovis High School won a state football championship?

The 2001 Clovis Wildcats, coached by Eric Roanhaus, went 13-0 and claimed the Class 5A state title.

Clovis beat Mayfield, 17-10, in the championship game that year.

The Wildcats played in the state championship game in 2004, 2005 and 2007, but lost those contests to La Cueva, Mayfield and Mayfield, respectively.

In its history, Clovis has won 13 New Mexico Activities Association football championships -- 1960, 1973, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1990, 1991, 1994 and 2001.

Portales’ most recent state title in football came in 2019 when the Rams beat Bloomfield in the title game, 23-0.

Clovis and Portales, along with most other area teams, begin their quest for the 2023 state football championships this week. Clovis hosts Hobbs at 7 p.m. Friday. Portales is at Albuquerque Highland on Saturday.
