Heritage Days dance at new location

A new location downtown for the dance that kicks off Portales’ Heritage Days festival and a place to enjoy beer and wine will be introduced to the two day festival Friday and Saturday, according to Karl Terry, executive director of the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce.

Terry said the new location for the Friday night dance will place event goers close to downtown’s food and drink businesses. Music will be provided by Never2Young, a band from Midland, Texas.

The beer and wine serving area will be located next to live performance stage at Portales’ City Park near the ball fields, Terry said, and will open at 11 a.m. Saturday. The beverage area will be sponsored by the Enchantment Vineyard of Portales.

As usual for Heritage Days, Saturday will kick off with a Fun Run at 8:05 a.m., starting on 7th Street at Portales City Park. Terry said this year’s fun run will be a two-mile “family friendly” event. “We’ll have strollers and kids on bikes participating,” he said. It will be a “fun event for everyone age 0 to 99,” but there will still be competition and prizes for winners in different age categories.

Registration for the fun run ends today, Terry said.

Participants for the Fun Run, the Heritage Days Parade and car show may register by visiting the event’s web page at Portales.com by calling the chamber at (575) 356-8541.

Registration for the Heritage Days Car Show will begin at 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The event is open to all antiques, collectibles, classic cars, and pickups. There is a $25 entry fee and prizes for winners in several categories, chosen by the entrants themselves, Terry said.

Terry said about 90 cars appeared last year, and he expects a similar number of entries this year. The cars will line up in the shade of trees along Ninth Street at Abilene, he said.

The Heritage Days annual parade steps off at 10 a.m. Saturday at Avenue O and U.S. Route 70 on the ENMU campus). The parade will proceed north on Second Street to Abilene, where it will turn right to end at the Memorial Building on Abilene.

Live performances start at 10:30 a.m. and continue to the end of Heritage Days at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Featured acts will include the Clovis Circus Troupe, singer-guitarist Colton Stevens, the Pony Creek trio, Dance Studio Extreme and trick roper Wild Bill Cathey.

A cornhole tournament sponsored by the James Polk Stone Community Bank will begin at 1 p.m., Terry said.
