Draggin' Main kicks off Saturday

Clovis’ annual Draggin’ Main gathering kicks off an eight-day run on Saturday.

Hair bands and a “hot rods launch party” are the highlights Saturday at the Curry County Events Center, according to Zane Brothers, who helped organize the event.

Activities begin at noon and continue until 10 p.m., followed by a week’s worth of activities that culminate June 17 with the annual cruise up and down Clovis’ Main Street.

Co-founder Gene Porter described Draggin’ Main as an “all things related to cars” event.

“It’s a non-discriminatory motor event,” Porter said. “Cars, bikes, trucks, tractors, cheap, expensive, unfinished, finished, vintage, classic, new, old.”

Tickets for Saturday’s hair bands concerts are $12.

The official “kickoff party” for the week is Sunday at Plains Regional Medical Center, Brothers said. That will feature food trucks, drag cars, acrobats and more.

Drive-in tours start Monday and run through Thursday next week – Foxy’s Drive-In, Taco Box, Twin Cronnie Drive-In and Weinerschnitzel, in that order -- each beginning at 5 p.m.

The June 16 spotlight will be a “Hittin’ the Bricks’ block party” starting at 5 p.m. on Main Street, Brothers said.

June 17 begins with the Gearhead Gathering at Hillcrest Park, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Brothers encouraged people who are interested in being in the Gearhead Gathering to register early by going to the website, dragginmain.org.

Brothers described the Gearhead Gathering as more than a car show.

“But it’s a car show,” Brothers said. “ If you’re proud of your car bring it out.”

The main event runs from 6 p.m. to midnight on June 17 with the cruise on Main.

“Everybody just bring out your car and join in,” Brothers said.

Brothers said this year’s special guest at Draggin’ Main will be actor Butch Patrick who played Eddie Munster in “The Munsters” TV show that ran from 1964 to 1966.

“He’s bringing the ‘Dragula Dragster’ and ‘Eddie’s Chopper,’ both from the TV show,” Brothers said.

Brothers said it’s the dragster that Herman Munster, the dad in the show, raced.

“It looks like a big coffin,” Brothers said. “Patrick owns all of the original vehicles from the show.”

Also, Brothers said the organizing committee is having a drawing for a 1987 Chevrolet C-10 Custom short bed pickup.

Tickets are available on the Draggin’ Main website.
