Animal shelter has distemper outbreak

Clovis’ animal control department is reporting a distemper outbreak in the city.

The city’s animal shelter is responding to the outbreak according to a news release from Clovis Police Chief Roy Rice. Animal control is part of the police department.

“Existing protocols include vaccinations of all animals upon entry to the shelter, thorough daily cleaning of the facility, observing the health and wellness of animals in the shelter and taking appropriate action regarding their health as needed,” according to the release.

A consultation with local veterinarians has been done and effective immediately, animals who have been in the shelter for more than 15 days, who received the parvo/distemper vaccine on intake and a booster two weeks later, will be available for adoption, according to the release.

Prior to the 15-day quarantine animals will be unavailable for adoption.

Intake of animals into the shelter will continue to be at the discretion of the animal control supervisor.
