Police: Nationwide social media threats not substantiated

Social media threats of violence aimed at unspecified schools on Wednesday are nationwide and not substantiated, according to area school officials and law enforcement officers.

Portales schools Superintendent Johnnie Cain sent a letter to parents and guardians on Tuesday night, making residents aware of the threats.

"The police and Sheriff''s Office is aware of this post and have informed us that this is a nation-wide media post in other states and across New Mexico.," Cain wrote. "Although this does not appear to be a credible threat, out of an abundance of caution, police will be patrolling all schools (on Wednesday). If you choose to keep your child home, please notify your school to excuse him or her."

Clovis Deputy Police Chief Trevor Thron said there is nothing to suggest the threats originated in eastern New Mexico.

"However," he said, "our detectives are looking into it. ... We will have an increased presence in the schools (on Wednesday)."

Thron said the reports have circulated as far away as Florida.

Roswell police on Tuesday told area residents "there is currently no evidence to substantiate an actual threat exists locally, but (Roswell police) will take steps to monitor the situation."

Clovis and Portales schools both plan regularly scheduled days on Wednesday.

"We appreciate the partnership and support provided by the Clovis Police Department and their increased presence at our campuses when we are managing situations such as this," Clovis schools stated in a news release.
