ENMU: 'No findings of abusive nature'

Investigation related to use of volunteer services, university statement reads.

An investigation into the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball program resulted in “no findings of an abusive nature,” according to a university statement Athletic Director Paul Weir provided The News on Tuesday.

The statement also said the investigation was related to “the use of volunteer services” and there were no findings “that any ENMU employee forced student-athletes to seek volunteer services.”

Weir said the statement was issued by the university in response to questions from The News regarding massages athletes had allegedly been receiving.

The university announced last week it would not retain women’s basketball coach Meghan de los Reyes but provided no reason.

De los Reyes did not immediately respond to questions from The News on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s statement from ENMU said, “On April 18, ENMU announced a change in leadership for the women’s basketball program based on a complete review of the entire program. As this may turn into a legal matter, this will be our only comment on the situation.”

The statement from ENMU also read:

“We did identify opportunities to improve training practices and internal policies with regards to volunteers and volunteer services. Upon receiving the initial complaint on this matter, ENMU instructed the volunteer to cease any continued services with student-athletes. During the investigation the student-athletes were given contact information for various resources including law enforcement.”

The statement did not address any reason why law enforcement would have been involved.

University Chancellor James Johnston did not immediately respond to questions from The News.

District Attorney Quentin Ray said Tuesday his office is not investigating the case and he is not aware of any police reports having been filed.

De los Reyes was hired by ENMU in July 2021 to her first head coaching position after 11 years as a college women’s assistant coach. The Greyhounds went 22-29 in her two seasons, including 15-23 in the Lone Star Conference.
