Lady Cats drop two twin bills

CLOVIS – It was a tough week for Clovis High's softball team.

After getting run-ruled at Lady Wildcat Field on Tuesday by Roswell High, the Lady Wildcats found the going even rougher when they welcomed second-ranked and defending Class 5A champion Carlsbad on Friday night. The Cavegirls (20-2, 8-0 District 4-5A) beat Clovis 18-1 and 18-0, with both games ending in three innings on the 10-run rule.

The Lady Cats (2-20, 0-8) managed only two hits off Cavegirls senior Johnna Aragon in the opener, including a home run by junior Giselle Petner in the bottom of the first. They were then no-hit in the abbreviated second game by Cavegirls senior Haiven Schoolcraft, who struck out seven of the nine batters she faced.

Aragon went 7-for-7 in the twin bill for Carlsbad, with three doubles, a triple, a home run, nine RBIs – six in Game 1 – and seven run scored.

The Lady Cats host Hobbs on Tuesday, then visit Roswell High on Friday in 4:30 p.m. doubleheaders to end the season.

Roswell High 24-17, Clovis 5-7 (Tuesday) – The visiting Lady Coyotes were either blanked in an inning or put up a crooked number against the Lady Cats.

Senior Jazmen Lucero had a monster day for Roswell High (13-9, 2-6), going 5-for-5 in the opener with two doubles and a homer and 4-for-5 in the second game with two doubles and a triple. She drove in 10 runs – five in each game – and scored seven.

Clovis led 1-0 through two innings in Game 1 before Roswell High scored six times in the third, then added 10 in the fourth and eight in the fifth to end the tilt after five on the 10-run rule.

Romero went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored for the Lady Cats.

Game 2 was tied 5-5 after each team scored five times in the second inning. Roswell High, which lost on Friday night at Hobbs 8-0 and 12-1, led Clovis 12-7 before adding five tallies in the top of the seventh.

Senior Mikayla Romero was 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice for the Lady Cats. Giselle Romero and senior Aubreana Robles were both 2-for-4.
