Portales woman killed in Friday night crash

A 61-year-old Portales woman was killed Friday night in a vehicle crash near the intersection of West Second St. and South Ave. C.

Martha Polanco Lozano was transported to Roosevelt General Hospital then to a Lubbock-area hospital where she died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to Portales police.

Police Chief Christopher Williams said the driver of the other vehicle, a 1996 bus, initially left the scene but later returned. Lisa Poitras, 55, of New Hampshire, was arrested and charged with homicide by motor vehicle.

Poitras was in the Roosevelt County Detention Center, Williams said.

According to a news release issued Monday morning by Williams:

The crash happened about 9:20 p.m. Friday. Upon arrival officers discovered Polanco Lozano inside of a small sedan.

According to witness statements, Polanco Lozano was traveling northbound on Avenue C when Poitras’ bus failed to stop at the eastbound red light at Avenue C.

Williams said Portales police are investigating.
