Melrose sweeps Buffalo Relays

MELROSE – Melrose swept both team championships on Thursday in the Buffalo Relays track meet, topping Logan, Fort Sumner and Texico in both divisions. More than 20 schools participated.

Melrose boys finished with 96 ½ points to 80 ½ for the Longhorns, 58 for the Foxes and 54 for Texico. On the girls' side, the Lady Buffs compiled 81 points to 63 for Logan, 45 for Fort Sumner and 44 for the Wolverines.

In boys competition, junior Michael Cardonita took a pair of wins for the Buffaloes, winning high jump (6 feet) and triple jump (40-7). The Buffs also got wins from Brandon Grey in the 300 hurdles (43.8 seconds) and the 400 (46.48) and 1,600 medley (4:10.00) relay teams, while they were second to Logan by one-hundredth of a second (1:39.03) in the 800 relay.

Senior Jahvon Askew and sophomore Taye Smith claimed a pair of wins each for Texico. Askew took first in long jump (20-8) and the 100 (11.44), while Smith captured victories in shot put (48-10) and discus (139-8 ½).

Also winning for the Wolverines was junior Remington Hunt in the 800 (2:13.25).

Notching wins for the Lady Buffs were junior Graci Odom in the 100 hurdles (18.04), where she edged teammate Isabelle Sena (18.24), and 300 hurdles (51.72); senior Paityn Nicholson in shot put (33-7) and discus (106-9), and sophomore Heidi Macfarlane in pole vault (8-6). Elida senior Raquel Rogers was second to Nicholson in shot put (30-6) and discus (105-2 ¾).

Melrose added victories in the 1,600 (4:39.72) and 3,200 (11:31.96) relays. Meantime, Dora claimed second in the 400 relay (54.80) behind Logan, and got a second-place finish in the 100 (13.87) from eighth-grader Karen Inge.

Top finishes for Texico's girls were seconds by sophomore Desiree Holman in javelin (91-0) and the 800 relay team (1:56.98).

Eunice takes pair from Lady Coyotes – In a District 4-2/1A softball doubleheader on Tuesday, Eunice posted 15-9 and 19-14 victories at Dora.

The Lady Cardinals (9-4 overall) erased a 5-2 deficit with a six-run fourth in the opener, then trailed 9-5 before tallying 11 times in the fifth inning in Game 2. Sophomore McKayla Pierce went 7-for-10 and scored seven runs in the two games for Eunice, while senior Karla Ornelas was 5-for-10 with a double and six runs scored.

For Dora (5-4), Karen Inge went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three runs scored in each game, and three RBIs in the opener while her twin sister, Kinsley Inge, and sophomore Justice Deason were both 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

In the second game, junior Faith Jasso was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs; Deason went 3-for-6 with two triples, three RBIs and two runs, and junior Bre'Ann Rodriguez chipped in 3-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs.

Texico girls compete in Ruidoso – Liz Elam shot 44-48 – 92 on Monday to lead the Texico girls golf team in the Leroy Gooch Invitational tournament. The second and final round of the tournament was canceled on Tuesday due to high winds.

Texico, one of the smaller schools in the eight-team event, finished in last place at 450. Deming was the team champion at 366, followed by Belen (370), Roswell Goddard (382), Socorro (383), Hobbs (386), Alamogordo (396) and Lovington (443).

Other tallies for the Lady Wolverines were freshman Gabby Delarosa 56-61 – 117, junior Sierra Hunt 55-68 – 123 and sophomore Sophie Schaap 65-61 – 126.

Belen sophomore Rylee Salome was the individual medalist, shooting a round of 76.
