Capitan nips Wolverines in nine

ROSWELL – Capitan pushed over a run in the ninth inning and the Tigers held on for a 7-6 victory over Texico on Friday in the consolation semifinals of New Mexico Military's Colt Classic.

The Wolverines (2-3) were slated to face Tularosa in Saturday's seventh-place matchup.

Texico put together a five-run third for a 5-3 lead, then scored in the fifth to tie it and neither side tallied again until the ninth. Junior Logan Ritter went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for Capitan (3-3), which faced Hatch Valley in Saturday's fifth-place contest.

Senior Jadyn Gonser went 3-for-5 with a triple and scored twice for the Wolverines, while freshman Jesus Chavez was 2-for-3 and scored once and senior Tristan Chavez finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.

In other Friday area baseball:

Grady 11-17, Floyd 1-4 – The Bronchos notched a pair of five-inning wins at Floyd, scoring in all but one frame in each contest.

Sophomore Jayce Garrett was 2-for-4 with a double for Grady (5-2) in the opener. Juniors Daegan East and Isaias Nieto were each 1-for-2 for the Broncos, with Nieto scoring Floyd's lone run on a double by East in the fourth inning.

In Game 2, Grady put together back-to-back, six-run rounds in the second and third to take control. Sophomore Deakin Ragland went 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs and also threw a complete game for Grady, striking out seven, while Garrett and junior Zane Rush were both 3-for-5.

Senior Brayan Gallegos had a two-run single and was hit by a pitch twice, scoring once, for the Broncos.

Melrose 36, Dora 4 – The Buffaloes and Coyotes were tied 4-4 after 2 ½ innings at Melrose, but the home team took off after that, finishing with 19 hits and pounding out three home runs.

Junior Michael Cardonita went 3-for-5 for Melrose (3-0) with a three-run homer, five RBIs and four runs scored, while junior Dathan Yeary was 3-for-4 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and finished with six RBIs and four runs scored. Freshman Jaxon Odom was 2-for-2 with four runs scored and five RBIs, including a three-run double.

The Coyotes (0-2) were led by senior Kegan Rodriguez, who was 3-for-3 with a two-run single. Junior Caden Smith also knocked in a pair of runs.

In another game on Friday, Elida (3-1) suffered its first loss of the campaign, a 15-1 decision at Magdalena (1-2).

In softball on Friday:

Dora 16-17, Logan 6-2 – At Dora, the Lady Coyotes improved to 4-2 with a pair of run-rule wins over the Lady Longhorns, who were playing their first games of the spring.

Sophomore Justice Deason posted a 5-for-5 outing, scoring three times, for the Lady Coyotes. Eighth-grader Karen Inge went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored in the opener while senior Jenna Ramirez was also 3-for-5 and scored three times.

In Game 2, Dora jumped on Logan (0-2) for seven first-inning runs and cruised. Deason had another perfect game at the plate, going 3-for-3 and driving home three runs.

In Thursday area baseball:

Grady 18, Jal 12 – Down 12-6, the Bronchos rallied for five runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh to topple the host Panthers.

Eighth-grader Andre Garcia was 5-for-6 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored for Grady. Another eighth-grader, Madden Flood, finished 3-for-6 with a triple and three RBIs while Ragland and Rush each went 2-for-6 with two RBIs.

Jal (2-9) got a 3-for-4 outing with two runs and three RBIs from senor Damian Baeza. Senior Trent Butts was 3-for4-5 with a double, an RBI and a run, and senior Daniel Herrera went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and a run batted in.

Eunice 18, Texico 7 – In the opening round of the NMMI tournament, the Cardinals put up a crooked number in each of the six innings of the contest, stopped by the 10-run rule. Eunice (6-1), which beat Santa Rosa 4-2 on Friday to notch a berth against NMMI in Saturday's championship game, got a 3-for-4 outing from junior Brady Colborn, with a triple, an inside-the-park home run, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Also, senior Alfredo Morales went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and three RBIs, senior Jonathan Caballero was 2-for-5 with a double, junior Braelon Jeter was 2-for-4 and scored three times and senior Ayden Pender finished 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.

Texico (2-3) was led by Jadyn Gonser and Tristan Chavez, both 2-for-4, and junior Kyle Gonser with a two-run triple. Tristan Chavez had a double and scored a run.
