Cats turn back Rockets

CLOVIS – Clovis High's boys are off to a solid start this season.

Meantime, the Lady Wildcats are also making progress.

The CHS boys earned their second dual win of the season on Tuesday, defeating Roswell Goddard 7-2 at the CHS tennis courts. Meantime, the Lady Cats came up just short in a 5-4 loss to their Goddard counterparts.

Every win for the Clovis boys came in straight sets. Meantime, they made the Rockets work for their wins, with junior Gerald Gonzales dropping a 7-5, 6-4 decision to Goddard senior Craig Martinez at No. 2 singles, while sophomores Taksh Patel and Landon Wolf took their Goddard opponents to a third-set supertiebreaker at No. 2 doubles.

"I think we did great," CHS boys coach Tristan Pautler said. "I'm proud of the way (we) played. Those kids are doing what I'm asking of them, and it seems to be working."

Pautler said he'd like to see his team show a little more emotion when they do something well. "I want them to be a little more excited," he said.

Seniors David Case and Gerald Gonzales posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and teamed up to take the No. 1 doubles match. Juniors Topher Oaks and Drex Carter did likewise at No. 5 and 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, while Wolf added a 6-1, 6-2 win over Goddard freshman Nic Lara at No. 4 singles.

On the girls' side, Goddard took the first three singles divisions and Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to clinch the dual win. Freshmen Emily Bjorkland and Gigi Greer won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles for the Lady Cats, and teamed up to beat Goddard's Sydney and Jayden Miller 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

The other win for the CHS girls came from senior Odalys Olivas at No. 4 singles.

"We continue to make progress and step up our game each time we play," Lady Cats coach Rylie Garza said. "I'm proud of these girls and the way they endured the wind, played hard and improved their games."

CHS squads were to return to action this weekend in a tournament hosted by Roswell High. On Tuesday, the Cats and Lady Cats entertain Portales in a 3 p.m. start.
