Elida earns No. 2 seed in District 4-1A boys meet

ELIDA – Elida’s boys clinched the No. 2 seed in this week’s District 4-1A tournament with a 63-43 victory over Gateway Christian on Saturday.

On Thursday, the Tigers (10-13, 4-2) will take on the winner of Tuesday’s matchup sending Floyd to Gateway Christian. Thursday’s winner advances to Saturday’s final at top-seeded Dora.

Brothers Jose and Seth Jimenez each funneled in 15 points and junior Gage Hartman added 10 for Elida, which opened a 33-17 halftime lead on the Warriors (3-17, 1-5). Senior Hayden Wigley topped Gateway with eight points.

In other boys action on Saturday:

Melrose 81, Grady 34 – The Buffaloes reached the 20-win mark behind 16 points from freshman Jaxon Odom, 13 from sophomore Josiah Roybal and 12 from junior Michael Cardonita. All 13 players scored for Melrose (20-5, 4-2 District 6-1A).

Topping the Bronchos (7-15, 0-8) was senior Carlos Marin with 11 points.

In Friday’s 52-45 victory over Legacy Christian (20-5) at Melrose, sophomore Cy Draper scored 14 points while Cardonita and Odom each added 10. For the Silverbacks, sophomore Daniel Tavarez had 13 points, junior Robie Turrieta 12 and sophomore Dallas Baca 10.

Bovina 63, Hale Center 47 – In a neutral-court tuneup for this week’s Class 2A bi-district round, the Mustangs (16-15) saw a 10-point halftime lead shrink to one after three-quarters, then outscored the Owls 23-8 in the final stanza to win going away. The Mustangs were to face Floydada in a bi-district tilt at Littlefield on Tuesday, while Hale Center (13-15) was set to take on Farwell in a game at West Plains H.S. in Amarillo.

Senor Ceasar Amaya led three Mustangs in double digits with 16 points, followed by seniors Nathan Guevara with 15 and Darian DeLaRosa with 12. For Hale center, sophomore Aiden Baldridge had five 3-pointers and 20 points while sophomore Trey Coleman chipped in 17.

In girls tilts on Saturday:

Elida 37, Gateway Christian 35 – Down by eight at halftime, the Lady Tigers rallied to force overtime, outscored Gateway 6-4 in the extra session for the District 4-1A triumph at Elida.

Freshman Hattie Bilbrey had 13 points and eighth-grader Reatta Munsell 11 for Elida (4-15, 3-3), which lost at Gateway 43-18 earlier in the week. Sophomore Kimber Balok finished with 10 points for the Lady Warriors (6-12, 3-3).

Logan 70, Dora 51 – In non-district play at Logan, the Lady Longhorns (16-10) erupted for 47 first-half points against the Lady Coyotes (17-9).

Junior Camryn Cantrell led Logan with 15 points, followed by junior Liz Horner and freshman Desta Rose with 14 apiece. Junior Faith Jasso scored 14 for Dora, while freshman Dakota Jones added 10 and junior Hanna Wade chipped in 8.

Melrose 68, Grady 31 – The Lady Buffs (23-1, 6-0 District 6-1A) poured in 51 first-half points and cruised to victory at Grady.

Ten players scored for Melrose, led by junior Graci Odom with 17 and senior Paityn Nicholson with 10. Junior Adelina Ramirez netted seven points for the Lady Bronchos (10-12, 0-6).
