Official offers high wind travel tips

With this last week’s high wind conditions in eastern New Mexico, those with the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Department want to remind drivers hitting the road how to stay safe under these conditions.

Officer Wilson Silver, the Public Information Officer for NMSP, suggests several tips that he says drivers may want to follow if they find themselves in strong winds when traveling to their destination.

First, Silver said to plan ahead.

“Check the weather before leaving and allow extra time to reach your destination,” Silver said.

Silver added it also means preparing the vehicle with proper items like a phone charger in the car, a functional spare tire and jack, and a flashlight that has a source to keep it fully charged.

Next, Silver said that while driving, a driver should keep both hands on the steering wheel.

“Allow more distance between other vehicles in front of you. Reduce your speed and don’t over-correct if the wind pushes your vehicle out of your lane,” Silver said.

He added a driver should try to avoid driving next to high profile vehicles such as tractor trailers, buses, and similar vehicles. He said it’s also important to turn the headlights on in case dusty areas limit visibility.

Silver reminds drivers to always wear a seatbelt.

He went on to say if motorists have any doubts about the weather conditions, they may want to reconsider their decision to travel unless it is absolutely necessary.
