CLOVIS – Zarai Lewis made sure there would be no upset in Clovis High's Plateau Holiday Classic on Wednesday night.
Lewis poured in a season-best 22 points, and while the Lady Wildcats were far from their best they cruised into Thursday night's championship game against Centennial at Rock Staubus Gym with a 46-30 victory over Miyamura.
CHS girls coach Jeff Reed, though, was not happy with the team's overall play.
"We've got to be able to finish shots because we won't be able to hold down good people defensively all night long," he said. "I feel like we came out and got off to a good start, and then we kind of got into a lull."
The Lady Cats (7-3) led 15-3 at the quarter and extended the margin to 16 late in the half, but Miyamura was able to play them evenly after that.
"Miyamura had a hard time handling the ball," Reed said. "The biggest problem we had was not finishing in the paint, and they're not very big."
Lewis, who went 8-for-8 from the free throw line, scored at least four points in each quarter. Junior post Kailyn Jefferson was next in line with nine points.
For the Lady Patriots (1-8), sophomore Kaytoinette Ross finished with 13 points.
Centennial advanced with a 65-62 victory over Sandia. In consolation semifinals on Wednesday, Las Vegas Robertson downed Roswell High 60-44 while Taos scored a 55-20 victory over Dexter.
Clovis 71, Dexter 24 (Tuesday) – The Lady Cats ran away with a 21-1 lead at the quarter and totally dismantled the young Lady Demons.
"We jumped on them and pressed them, and they could not handle it," Reed said. "It could've been worse than it was, but we missed some easy shots (early)."
Lewis was the only player in double figures in the contest, finishing with three 3-pointers and 19 points. Nine players scored for Clovis, with seniors Ali Thomas and Martha De La Rosa tally nine apiece.
High scorers for the Lady Demons (2-7 after Thursday's loss to Taos) were senior Jazmin Duran and sophomore Alexa Miramontes, both with seven points.
