Steers, Lady Blue cruise in openers

FARWELL — Farwell’s boys and girls had no trouble in their opening-round games of the Farwell Invitational on Thursday.

The Steers notched a 65-34 victory over Hale Center in the quarterfinals of the boys meet, while the Lady Blue captured their first tilt in pool play with a 72-21 win over Muleshoe.

Senior Corey Stancell led three players in twin digits for Steers (4-2), scoring 20 points, while junior Alec Actkinson added 14 and senior Adrian Munoz tallied 12. Farwell broke the game open by limiting the Owls (4-5) to just 11 second-half points.

Sophomore Lionel Martinez paced Hale Center with eight points.

Meantime, the Lady Blue (5-3) ran out to a 23-2 lead at the quarter and never looked back as all 11 players scored in the matchup, led by junior Kennedi Richey with 11 points and junior Chloee Whitten and sophomore Makylee Baldwin with 10 apiece.

For Muleshoe (7-7), senior Kylie Hernandez finished with eight points.

In other action involving area boys teams:

Littlefield 67, Texico 39 — The Wildcats opened a 28-point lead with a 20-3 run in the third quarter.

Junior Omar Martinez led three in double figures for Littlefield (4-5) with 16 points, followed by sophomore Chippy Green with 13 and junior Jeremiah Trevino with 11.

Texico (3-2) was led by 22 points from senior Jahvon Askew and 11 from junior Cade Figg.

Sundown 52, Muleshoe 35 — The Roughnecks (3-3) built a 15-point halftime lead and held off a comeback bid by the Mules (3-2).

Sophomore Adam Escamilla scored 21 points to lead Sundown, while sophomore Jaryn Flores had 12 and senior Noah Peralez 11. For Muleshoe, junior Sebastian Kirven scored 20 points.

In other area girls matchups:

Hale Center 53, Texico 32 — The Lady Owls (11-2) got out of the blocks quickly, leading 21-4 at the quarter.

Senior Lorena Espinosa and juniors Mariyah Espinosa and sophomore Jaydee Castillo all had eight points for Hale Center. Junior Kaya New took game honors with 12 points for Texico (2-4).

Hale Center 49, Muleshoe 23 — Mariah Espinosa finished with 13 points as Hale Center outscored the Lady Mules 16-1 in the second stanza after trailing by five through the first eight minutes.

Hernandez was again Muleshoe’s high scorer with five points.
