Ex-Tech coach Leach in critical condition

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi State University football coach Mike Leach was in critical condition Monday at University of Mississippi Medical Center after being hospitalized Sunday due to a “personal health issue,” school officials said.

"Mike's family is with him and appreciates the overwhelming expressions of love and support for the coach, but also requests that their family's privacy be respected at this time,” a school statement read.

Leach, 61, was transported by ambulance from his home to the university's medical center in Jackson, Mississippi.

Leach earlier told reporters he had pneumonia during the season but had felt better since.

Leach, one of college football’s most notable personalities, is 19-17 in three seasons at Mississippi State. He was previously head coach at Texas Tech from 2000-09 and Washington State from 2012-19.

Mississippi State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett has been placed in charge of the football program until Leach returns. The Bulldogs play Illinois in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Jan. 2.

Public prayers of support came from throughout the coaching community.

USC coach Lincoln Riley tweeted: "Prayers for my good friend Mike Leach. Please keep Coach and his family in your prayers.''

Present Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire also tweeted, "Thoughts and prayers for Coach Leach.''
