Juveniles detained after video shows gun at Clovis High

Two juveniles are in custody after being accused of unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon at Clovis High School.

Clovis police on Wednesday issued a news release stating the juvenile males are being held in the Lea County Juvenile Detention Center after being detained on Tuesday.

Police Lt. Trevor Thron said police are not aware of any threats being made in connection with the incident. He said one of the boys is suspected of being involved in a drive-by shooting this summer.

Social media and school security video led to the boys being detained, police said.

According to the police news release:

About 1 p.m. Monday, officers responded to Clovis High School in reference to a student receiving a Snapchat video.

“The video showed two juvenile males who appeared to be walking along the side of the Clovis High School,” the release states. “In the video, one of the juveniles opens his jacket revealing what appears to be the handle of a shotgun that has the buttstock sawed off, and then reveals his waistband showing what appears to be the handle of a pistol. Both juveniles in the video were identified by law enforcement and school staff.”

Police initially were not sure when the video was recorded and could not confirm the juveniles were on school property. But on Tuesday, school officials provided law enforcement with a security video, time-stamped 11:39 a.m. Monday, that correlated with the Snapchat video.

Police said warrants were obtained on Tuesday and the boys were taken to Lea County, where area juveniles are housed.

Thron said neither juvenile would talk to police “as to what their reasons were for bringing firearms on school property and for making the video.”
